Earthmerlin
I'm looking for historic fiction chapter books-novels for a 9 yr old who loves action. We're going through a rough time in life and so I don't want heavy topics (i.e., Holocaust, etc.). She has no preference as to time periods or events but she adores suspense & action. Suggestions please!
8filltheheart
Bethlehem Books has lots of good historical fiction. My dd really enjoyed Son of Charlemagne.

Lori D.
My #1 pick would be the Miss Bianca books -- charming, humorous, suspenseful action (peril as the mice rescue prisoners), wonderfully written with great vocabulary. VERY different from the Disney animated films. My #2 pick would be The Wolves of Willoughby Chase -- very fun Charles Dickens type of story/characters -- riches-to-rags-to-riches story, with an evil governess, and suspenseful escapes. If needing something sweet, light, and fun then Baby Island and Nim's Island are fast reads and the premise (island survival) is so perfect for this age, as well as the humorous misadventures in Edward Eager's magic series (Half Magic, Magic by the Lake, and Knight's Castle are the first 3). BEST wishes for the rough time coming to a quick and pleasant resolution or end! Warmest regards, Lori D. Historical Mystery/Action - Roman mystery series (Lawrence) - Samurai mystery series (Hoobler) - Baker Street Irregulars (Newman) -- and others by Newman (the series has been restarted by other authors -- don't know how they compare) - The Wollstonecraft Detective Agency series (Stratford) - Lady Grace mystery series (Cavendish) Historical Action/Adventure (some have humor, too) - By the Great Horn Spoon (Fleischman) - The Whipping Boy (Fleischman) - The Great Wheel (Lawson) - The Wolves of Willoughby Chase (Aiken) 20th Century Mystery/Puzzle-Solving Action - From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler (Konigsberg) - Chasing Vermeer (Bailliett) - Sammy Keyes series (Van Draanen) - Mysterious Benedict Society series (Stewart) - Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library (Grabenstein) - Book Scavenger (Bertman) - Eco Mystery series (George) 20th Century Light/Fun Adventure - Baby Island (Brink) - Nim's Island (Orr) Talking Animal Action/Adventure - The Rescuers, Miss Bianca, The Turret, Miss Bianca in the Salt Mines, Miss Bianca in the Orient (Sharp) - Basil of Baker Street series (Titus) - Hank the Cowdog series (Erickson) Edited February 23, 2019 by Lori D.
