High Level Phonemic Awareness

Recommended Posts

The PAST test and an excerpt from Kilpatrick's book is free:

https://www.cec.sped.org/~/media/Files/Professional Development/Webinars/Handouts/Excerpts from Equipped for Reading Success.pdf

The book is filled with activities for upper level phonemic awareness, well worth the price if your child fails any level of the PAST test.  I've found it more powerful than LiPS for my older remedial students who struggle with phonemic awareness.

Full book, you have to order from their website, but they are a legit organization.

The organization also has a good list of decodable books for both older and younger students:

Oh yeah! I follow the Reading League on facebook. They seem really great.

I've used the PAST informally, but I didn't realize it was created by Kilpatrick. I kinda thought it was just some possibly-good random test from the Internet. I'm so glad to know it's the real deal! In the excerpt you posted, he provides a list of when typically-achieving children are able to manage the different tasks, which is so helpful.

Thank you!!!!

Wow, I started to read the excerpt from the beginning. His writing is great. It's not overly complicated! It's nice to read something technical that isn't so draining. 😄

Both Kilpatrick's books are really good!  The one I linked is most useful, it includes hundreds of practice PA activities.  His other book is great reference, it is on Amazon:
