Sk8ermaiden
We're heading off on a road trip next September! We'll hit Devil's Tower, Glacier, Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Grand Canyon, Painted Desert, and Petrified Forest. After the normal school year is over, we're going to hit US Geography with some puzzles and games. Does anyone have any resources they like for these parks or areas? The kids love books, they are 5 and 9. I'm also trying to pull together resources on the unique geography and history of the areas, the animals in them... I'm not asking for anything specific, just trying to pull together resources so they have some context for what they're seeing when they see it. I do design units like this for them frequently, but I wanted to see if anyone had any cool resources on the national parks or their features before I got started. Sherry in OH
The National Parks Junior Ranger Program is excellent. Scroll to the bottom of the page for park specific resources.
Sk8ermaiden
We are planning to have them do these during the long, long hours on the road!

You can often print off the junior ranger workbooks online before you go.
Sk8ermaiden
Yes! For every park we're seeing except Yellowstone and Grand Canyon I believe.
Sherry in OH
Your older child might like Mike Graf's Adventures with the Parkers series. Jeff Corwin's Junior Explorer and Lisa Cotrell Bentley's Wright on Time series cover some of the areas you plan to visit.
Sk8ermaiden
I did a quick "look inside" and she would probably love those, thanks!
Dudley
We went to Glacier last summer and i thought this one was cute, alittle too much info for my 7yo but it had a page for each animal , plant or site to see ,with picture , then a description , where to find it in the park, and a place to record when and where you saw it, kind of set up like a nature journal sort of , wish we would have had it at the beginning of the trip instead of the end. What I saw in Glacier:A Kids guide to the National Park
Slache
I swear there's a book series where you go through a day in the life of an animal at each park. Does anyone know what this is called?

My friend's 6 year old will really like looking at these because he's a huge wild animal lover. 3 hours ago, SeaConquest said: You could gameschool with this: https://www.amazon.com/Trekking-National-Parks-Family-Second/dp/B07H185K6H and this: https://www.amazon.com/LearningHerbs-Wildcraft-Herbal-Adventure-cooperative/dp/B001M9JD9W A new one is coming out too: Those look so cool; we can play them with our friends that are coming with us. The first one will help with geography too. Edited February 8, 2019 by Sk8ermaiden
Earthmerlin
These are just tidbits or add-ons but Ansel Adams' work, local Native American cultures, Spanish names you'll come across, & definitely take advantage of sky gazing!
Earthmerlin
Also, 9 yr olds are in 4th, at least mine is. I'm in MD & she has a FREE national park pass valid throughout her 4th grade year. That could save you some $$ because it can include guests. I'd check the site to see if you can get your family one.
Sk8ermaiden
Yes, that is the plan. We're taking full advantage
Bocky
I found Cynthia Light Brown, Geology of the Desert Southwest: Investigate how the Earth was formed with 15 projects useful with my middle schoolers for a similar trip. There are several books in the series; another one you might like is Geology of the Great Plains and Mountain West. The books have a lot of overlap in content. I particularly liked the descriptions of how the specific geology of each area developed.
Moncha
Brighty of the Grand Canyon - I think would be perfect for a 4th grader. https://kidstravelbooks.com/best-childrens-books-for-a-trip-to-the-u-s-national-parks/
