Okay, technically she’s not a puppy anymore, but 1 1/2 is close enough to puppyhood, right? This is the newest member of our pack, our sweet little hound Winry. We adopted her right before Christmas. She had been waiting for months for a home, first in a shelter down south and then up here at our Humane Society.❤️

Aw, I love rescue dog stories.  Also, I think it's interesting that many of these dogs start out in the south and move north.  Do you know why that is?  Our pup's mother was a rescue dog that was brought up from the south and moved to a shelter in the north.  It turned out that she was pregnant and we have one of her pups.

ETA:  Also, beautiful dog!!

According to my friend who is a shelter manager, the spay/neuter rate is lower in the south and many dogs are allowed to run loose, so there are lots of puppies being born. The adoption rate is lower in the south, too, so all that adds up to an overabundance of dogs and puppies needing homes. The shelters up here get truckload after truckload of them, and happily, they all get adopted.❤️

This is Tango. We're not clear on his age--somewhere between 10 months and a year. We adopted him via a rescue who had rescued him from a shelter in KY where they planned to put him down.  We think he is a Carolina Dog/Shepherd Mix.

Our current rescue came to us in the PNW from Houston, TX. Supposedly, over one million dogs are euthanized each year in the greater Houston area. She also had heartworm. Ironically, according to the vet here who treated her and had recently retired from practicing in the south, many people also don’t do heartworm prevention in the south. While virtually everyone here does it despite the fact that we don’t yet have the weather conditions that make it possible for dogs to acquire heartworm in our state.

my friend got a puppy who came from texas.  sweet boy.  Australian shepherd, lab, and golden retriever.   had a white spot on his chest and head - otherwise solid black with a golden's coat.
