Lisa in the UP of MI
I'm planning a one year survey of world history for my rising eighth grader next year. He's not super academic, but he does like non-fiction (especially science). I am considering using The Story of Science series, but I would also like a spine (or a few) that focus on general history. Any ideas? Edited November 21, 2018 by Lisa in the UP of MI
Targhee
Not a text spine, but what about Crash Course World History to go with The Story of Science? As an aside, the Janes Burke film series Connections is old but great at connecting scientific history with political history and I think very engaging. Also there are some great trade books, like Disappearing Spoon, that also weave science and history together. Have fun! I was not even thinking about videos, but that is actually a great idea. He and his siblings love watching lectures and documentaries. He's not a huge reader like his older sister, so that would allow us to pick more books on specialized topics as opposed to just one big general book. alisoncooks
If you're looking for a lighter history, this is what we'll use next year for 8th. https://www.wiesereducational.com/products/ags-world-history-mm8311.htm We're currently using the US History from the same publisher and like it. Very basic but great if you add extras or want to tie it in with another subject.
SanDiegoMom
We love Burnett's Spinning World History. He's an AP teacher who wrote the book as a supplement for his class -- it is VERY engaging and focuses on making connections between events. Appeals to my whole to parts thinkers.
