How many potatoes should I mash?

I am terrible about scaling things. I am making both shepherd's pie and meatloaf and mashed potatoes this week. Shepherd's pie will be in a 9x11 dish. I need enough mashed potatoes for myself and a hungry husband and growing 10-year old who will each have seconds. I'd like to make them all at once, so I don't have to mash twice. We'll eat them fresh on meatloaf night and then I'll prep the casserole to pop in the oven the following night. Any ideas on how many potatoes I need? I have 2, 3 lb bags.

I would do both three pound bags and if there are leftovers make them into potato patties and fry them in a little butter.

You need enough for two meals, serving 5 each (if dh and ds each have seconds both meals) so 10 servings from 6 pounds of potatoes sounds about right. And if you have leftovers, it’s a bonus.
