Nemom
Good morning everyone! I have found that inspiration for me often comes best in attempting to inspire and be accountable to others. I am starting this thread in the hopes of touching base with everyone on a daily basis (hopefully) to see what their day looks like. This will become more of a challenge as we get further into November but let's try to check in when we can. I was listening to a podcast last night by DIYMFA and took away a couple of things that I want to share. 1) Write something every day even if it is only one sentence. This will engage the creative side of your brain and help you to form a habit. Obviously during NaNo, we will need to be writing more than one sentence if our goal is to hit the 50,000 words. So starting today, I challenge everyone to write at least one sentence until November 31st. The sentence does not have to be something extremely creative and perfect. It does not have to be related to your NaNo project for the next thirteen days. (I do try to write every day personally whether it be a prayer, brain dump free write, or some form of creative writing.) 2) Writing prompts are an excellent tool because they force us to write outside of our comfort zone. I often use writing prompts, but I will admit that I scroll through until I find one that appeals to me and then free write. DIYMIA says I am doing it all wrong. I need to find a writing prompt that scares me a little and then write. A good way to do this is to use one of the random online prompt generators and use whatever it throws at me. I have heard in the past that this is also a good tool to use during NaNo when you are stuck. Find a good prompt and write your character out of the situation. My day is jam packed today. I have already done my prayer and brain dump writing. I also need to help my son complete a resume. My goal is to spend some time working on my story line or character development for NaNo at some point today. What is everyone else's goal for today? 1
Pen
1). I’m working on my fictional place . (Or anything else that comes to mind.) I came up with a name for it now, where even though there are real places with the name, I like it and think it could just be part of the story that there are other places with same name. (Like Venice, Italy and Venice, California and perhaps other Venices exist too, or like Springfield being a common place name). Anyhoo— I am working on how it is arranged, population size, etc. I may try drawing myself a map of my fictional place It seems to keep morphing in my mind, so I think a map or clear description may help And as I better know the place, where body gets found etc may all start to generate more ideas I hope 2) I am also progressing on the social aspect. I used social media to make an announcement of a planning etc session at library in nearest city to where I live with at least one other person saying she’ll be attending so far which I am feeling psyched about Then probably biweekly write ins in November Today I think I will fill out forms to put these on the NaNo regional calendar -/ or at least to start figuring out that process (since it’s my 1st year this could be the blind leading the blind. Any ideas for this meeting or likely biweekly write in for November welcome!)

Pen
When I called library they passed me to a library staff member who has done NaNoWriMo herself , which was helpful—not a struggle to convey spelling or what I was talking about. She wants a poster to put up. I guess I can just put basic info on paper by hand the old fashioned way. ?

Lady Florida.
I'm trying not to spend so much time listening to podcasts or reading about writing, that I don't actually write. I found Writing Drafts on my Stitcher app. I don't know if it's available on other podcast apps. It's from 2015 but still worth listening to. They did 30 podcasts in 30 days, following Nanowrimo. Each podcast either interviews someone or checks in with them for a Nanowrimo update. All of the ones I listened to so far have been 15 minutes or less. https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/narativ/writing-drafts

Pen
This morning I woke up with thoughts about my novel, but didn’t get them written down. That is my next thing to remedy with at least paper and pencil available near bed.
Pen
Hmm. I still have to get pencil and paper and also a working flashlight perhaps near the bed. Today my my goal is to write in cycles interspersed between tasks that need doing. Perhaps 10 minutes writing time each hour, and see how that works. I am hoping that may make the writing a pleasant break from washing dishes, doing laundry, paying bills, etc.
Ravin
This evening I'm going to draw a map. When I write fantasy stories, I find this helpful. Of course, the world isn't necessarily going to be one that fits on a flat map--I'm contemplating having interconnected worlds accessed through various means--something like the Nine Worlds of Norse mythology, all interconnected by the World Tree. That will mean actually having to do several maps.

And @Lady Florida. and anyone else interested. The NaNoWriMo video ? podcast?, whatever it was, yesterday had some points making it possibly worthwhile to try listening while doing other things on the next one if you have time. It also had some wasted back and forth stuff between Grant and Jennie. I also saw some of the free video with Jennie (didn’t realize that existed so I missed a lot probably. Missed all that came prior to the live video. ). What I did see had a lot of excellent suggestions. Some were similar to what was in the Grant and Jennie video but better explained imo. 1 point I got that I plan to do today is to spend 20 minutes writing about *why* I am going to be doing this writing (NaNoWriMo). It is supposed to be helpful to go to it and read at about two weeks into NaNoWriMo when feeling discouraged or tired or wanting to quit. Today there is a 9am pdt video afaik — with someone else Possibly related to “story” what does that mean ? Edited October 23, 2018 by Pen

Pen
I have been doing pre NaNoWriMo experiments with writing. Today I got up at 4 am — not deliberately but could not sleep. and between writing on WTM, got nearly 1000 words of novel ideas and scene sketch. It was the most and easiest I have done so far. But... I strongly want to put health and sleep ahead of writing. Dilemmas.
Nemom
This year I really want to focus on writing better in addition to the word count. So I spent yesterday studying Motivation & Reaction Units (MRUs). I plan on going back over some previous free writes today and rewriting them using the MRU technique. I'm hoping the practice will help me to utilize the technique naturally during NaNo. I'm sure it will take a lot more practice than I will be able to get done before 11/1 but at least it is a start. Pen-where are you finding the pre NaNo experiments?
Pen
There was some spot where I checked a box to be sent emails. Some emails are promoting sponsors, but some are a daily suggestion of what to do. Also there have been been some exercises in the videos. The next video starts in half an hour. I’ll try to find you a link. If I cannot go to NaNoWriMo site. Then to their sponsors and click CreativeLive. This morning will have something by Lisa Cron. Pen
Can’t seem to send good link to the video. here is yesterday long prep email: (possibly if you use the link it will let you check to get emails or maybe it is somewhere in personal settings... Writing Prep of the Day Prep Goal: 60 minutes of writing time. How did you spend your writing prep time yesterday? If 60 minutes is feeling too daunting for you, it's fine to break it into 10 or 20-minute sessions. One thing that's helping me this week when I'm feeling particularly slow to write? Telling myself I'll just open my notebook and write one sentence. Most of time, I end up writing way more than that. (Haven't announced your novel yet? Commit now!) Want a boost? Try one or both: Suggested Exercise: Practice creating conflict. Take two characters from the list below and think about how they might come into conflict. What is driving them internally: what are their motivations? What do they both want, and why might those desires set them against each other? A shy teenager with an accent who's starting to come out of their shell A corrupt politician A superhero who's seeing their powers change with age A hermit living deep in the woods A kid who just finds out that they were adopted A barber who knows all the neighborhood goings-on Optional Prompt: Check out the "Write this many words if..." thread in the Word Wars, Prompts, & Sprints forum, and take on the statements that apply to you! If you're interested in a word crawl (a themed set of writing prompts/challenges), there are some awesome ones in that forum as well, including a Harry Potter crawl and a Mamma Mia crawl! Ravin
Tuesday, I started a references Google doc for my nanowrimo, to put my worldbuilding notes, etc. into, and started word sketches of each of the nine worlds I put on the map, including a few details about the people and bits of back-story of those worlds. I only had a few minutes to work on it yesterday and this morning, but I should have blurbs done on each world, and on a few special places within the World Tree but outside the worlds proper. I'm having a bit more challenge when it comes to the characters; my main character and her family, at least, I want to do character sketches of before I start writing, but so far I don't even have the MC's name!
Pen
Another writing prompt from NaNoWriMo: Want a boost? Try one or both: Suggested Exercise: There will inevitably be tough moments during November as you try to write your novel... so this is a great time to practice some creative joy. Forget everything you think you should be doing, forget your ambitions... write something fun. Not necessarily something lighthearted, but something that's going to scratch all of your itches. Pen
Someone told me she did a cover in 10 minutes (and it looks better than mine!) and how she did it. I took longer, I’ve never even used an avatar picture before, but not a huge amount of time. There is freebie stuff available to use. She steered me to a free app called Canva I thought maybe it would help to focus or motivate me just like choosing a working title instead of having a blank rectangle telling me that ? 60% of cover choosers reach 50k words. Or whatever it said. Any way it felt like the box was nagging me, and now it doesn’t nag me anymore.

Ravin
I didn't get as much background written down as I'd originally thought I would this weekend, but plot development and some setting ideas for the world where a good part of the action will take place did start percolating, sparked in party by a lecture I attended this weekend. I'm going to throw in a dose of steampunk, and having given some thought to the mechanisms of how magical travel in my multidimensional world will work, together with what I learned this weekend in that lecture about folk beliefs about sidhe changelings and the idea of transmigration of the soul...I now have the major mechanism by which my MC is going to get sent on the first leg of their quest!
Nemom
I am having a terrible time getting motivated. I’ll be doing some write ins (at library or other spots) because I want the social component, but mostly I will write at home probably in short stints worked in around other things I am doing. Nemom
@vmsurbat1 @Ravin I will look at your link later when I have more time. Last year I incorporated a couple of tricks that I learned about either from a similar NaNo post or picked up somewhere else online. The first one was to include a quote or song lyrics somewhere in your story if you are struggling to make your word count for the day. This worked perfect for me as my character was at a funeral. I added the lyrics from Amazing Grace. The second was to write a goodbye letter from your MC to your antagonist or another character. This was awesome. I think my letter gave me my full word count for the day. ETA: The only way I have found to get back to this "club" is to click on the link in my notifications. Pen
I am on cellphone and have another way to get back which is to click on the icon at almost top of page, far right, that has 3 horizontal lines. (White lines on blue to the right of the search magnifying lens icon) drop down menu has “browse” click “browse” then from next menu click ”clubs” that takes one to clubs in general usually politics club is up top as it is very active, and this NaNoWriMo club is a ways down. If we post more here though it will probably keep the NaNoWriMo club up toward the top of the clubs list. (Hint. I like the higher number because I know there will be a few days during the month when I will likely not get any writing done because of other commitments. Good luck everyone!!

(Hint. To start a topic thread: go up to the menu thumbnails underneath the club header. They are "Home" "Introductions" "Novel Plans" "Write!". Choose which one you want to put your new topic thread in, and click on it. It will then take you to a page showing the existing topics under that heading, with a button near the top which says "Start new topic" in the same place where it says "Reply to this topic" at the top of the topic thread screen you are looking at as you read this.
