Help with these math problems please!

Recommended Posts

1). Dwight was helping his father build a corner cupboard.  Dwight found the height of the cupboard on the drawing to be 13 inches.  If the scale is 2inches=1 foot, tell how high the cupboard will be.

2). The depth of the cupboard on the drawing (problem 23) was 3 1/2 inches.  What was the actual depth of the cupboard?

3). The students at the Woodvale Mennonite School are building a model of the Mayflower.  The scale is 1:60, and the length of the actual Mayflower was 90 feet.  How long will the model be?

thanks

For Q1 and Q2,

the scale is 2 inch to 1 foot => 2 inch to 12 inch => 1inch to 6inch

so the scale is 1 to 6

height of cupboard on drawing is 13 inch. Actual height is 13 inch multiply by 6 = 78 inch = 6 feet 6 inch

depth of cupboard on drawing is 3.5 inch. actual depth is 3.5 inch multiply by 6 = 21 inch = 1 foot 9 inch

For Q3,

scale is 1:60

actual length was 90 feet

model length would be 90 feet divide by 60 =  1.5  feet

If the scale is 2inches=1 foot, tell how high the cupboard will be.

If 2 in = 1 foot, then 1 in = 6 inch, so (13* 6)  gives the height of the actual cupboard in inches.
Or
13 in = 12 inches + 1 inch. Since 2 inches = 1 foot, then 12 inches = 6 feet and the additional 1 inch is 6 inches, so (6 ft + 6 in) gives the height of the actual cupboard.
The cupboard will be = 78inches or 6.5 feet.

(2). The depth of the cupboard on the drawing (problem 23) was 3 1/2 inches.  What was the actual depth of the cupboard?

From part (1) we know that 1 inch on the drawing = 6 inches in real life, so multiplying 3 1/2 inches by 6 gives us (6*3) + (6*(1/2)) or (18 + 3) inches deep.
The cupboard is 21 inches deep.

(3). The students at the Woodvale Mennonite School are building a model of the Mayflower.  The scale is 1:60, and the length of the actual Mayflower was 90 feet.  How long will the model be?

Since the scale is 1:60, and the actual Mayflower was 90ft, then 90/60 will give us the models length. When simplifying the fraction you can break it down to

90/60 = (60 + 30)/60  which is the same as (60/60) + (30/60). 60/60 is 1, and 30/60 is 3/6 or 1/2. So you final answer is

The model with be 1 1/2 foot or 1.5 feet long

thanks

You're welcome.
