I need suggestions for middle school literature relating to Texas state history. Ideas?

Recommended Posts

My 7th grader will be studying Texas state history for social studies this year, and I want to coordinate his reading/literature with it.  The only one I know of is "The Boy In The Alamo" by Margaret Cousins.  Does anyone have  other literature suggestions for me?

ETA: I just realized that I could potentially use "Old Yeller" or "Holes".

Would The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate be too girly/young? The second book, especially, speaks more of the location and a historical event (hurricane and Galveston).

Texas Tech University press has a number of juvenile fiction titles. They can be found here: https://www.ttupress.org/Products/CategoryCenter/_maj-jf/Juvenile-Fiction.aspx

They are pricey, though. Not sure if they could be found here or obtained through interlibrary loan or not. I've seen several; a retired history teacher loaned one to DD (the Lasalle one) and it was a good hardback much along the lines of the Dear America books.

The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate is set close to where I work. (They "go" to Elgin as the big city as I recall)  The second book is not so local and more state-wide in scope yes.

The Sophie Washington books are about a girl who lives in Houston: https://www.amazon.com/Sophie-Washington-Tonya-Duncan-Ellis-ebook/dp/B078ZQFKFK/ref=pd_sbs_351_6?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B078ZQFKFK&pd_rd_r=24c46e52-ab95-11e8-9f1d-0fdf2b561195&pd_rd_w=8imDB&pd_rd_wg=ICjvb&pf_rd_i=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=0bb14103-7f67-4c21-9b0b-31f42dc047e7&pf_rd_r=7GX1GPKWV95T5B7SNCA2&pf_rd_s=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_t=40701&psc=1&refRID=7GX1GPKWV95T5B7SNCA2

I can't figure out what age the books are set for, but J. Frank Dobie frequently writes books set in Texas, including "Tales of Old Time Texas" that seems to be an anthology of stories. My son is a 6th grader this year so I'm looking into these for reading material for him next year. https://www.amazon.com/Tales-Old-Time-Texas-Frank-Dobie/dp/0292780699/ref=pd_rhf_dp_s_all_spx_0_2?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=0292780699&pd_rd_r=YCE4PDY1RCGG0VJC0PNM&pd_rd_w=PDrsU&pd_rd_wg=rnYDU&pf_rd_i=desktop-rhf&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=008d25aa-6425-4dad-a319-937d7226ac0c&pf_rd_r=YCE4PDY1RCGG0VJC0PNM&pf_rd_s=desktop-rhf&pf_rd_t=40701&psc=1&refRID=YCE4PDY1RCGG0VJC0PNM

Here's an article from Texas Monthly about the 50 best Texas books (As written in 1981). It does not specific children or anything, of course. But is a good list to peruse through: https://www.texasmonthly.com/articles/the-fifty-best-texas-books-august-1981/

ETA: Johnny Texas by Carol Hoff https://smile.amazon.com/Johnny-Texas-Carol-Hoff/dp/0937460818/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1535553392&sr=8-1&keywords=Johnny+Texas

I'm not even sure which of these is literature, and which is non-fiction, but I had this in a Texas history reading list, so thought I'd share.  Sorry, don't have the authors either.

Johnny Texas
