I know I am over thinking it but  in my house  have a kinder,2,3,and 6th grader. We are going to use Story of the World .  Where go I start?  Do I start at book 1 or Modern to Present day? I want to keep them on the same topics just different depth levels. Then what about my 2 and 3rd grader  they are suppose to be covering different topics in history? What do other parents ? I feel like I am over thinking.

Begin at the beginning, start with ancients unless there is a compelling reason to do otherwise. For example, if my kids were already blazing with enthusiasm for knights and castles, I might start with the middle ages. SOTW modern will likely be too much for the two younger children (although there may be more grade differentiation these days, I haven't used it since way back when). Ancients and middle ages tend to be the most interesting to younger students.

I don't understand your second question about the 2nd- and 3rd-graders and if they're supposed to be covering different topics in history. You can certainly have everyone on the same topics at different depth levels.
