Teaching reading to a child with Down syndrome

Recommended Posts

I was just going to say the I See Sam books.  I taught all 3 of mine to read (IQs 55-65).  It was  LONG process, esp. for one of them but she is now very functional at a 4th grade level or so.  She can decode at a higher level though.

You start with the first book and teach the sounds /s/ /a/ /m/ /I/(long I sound, the word I) and /ee/...the long sound but put the ee together on one flashcard.  Then you work on blending left to right into the words Sam and see.  once you have that down, they are ready to read the first 2 books.  From there it honestly only gets easier..........WEIRD concept I know, but honestly this first book as the most new sounds/words of any in the entire series.

Check out www.3rsplus.com and the case studies for my girls.  You can find the first 2 sets on line to print out in PDF format for free.
