Looking at a system for my Mom.  I think we want one of the mobile ones with GPS, as she is out and about a lot.  Are also looking at automatic fall detection, as she's 85 and has osteoporosis.

Any experience (good or bad) with various companies??

Any tips?

Thanks for all and any advice.  :)

I don't have specific brand recommendations, but I will say that our experience has been that those devices are only good if the person will actually wear them.   My grandfather had a pendant that he hated to sleep in, so he took it off every night when he went to bed.   Unfortunately, it didn't do him any good when he got out of bed in the middle of the night, slipped in the bathroom, and broke his hip.   The staff at the assisted living facility found him on the floor of the bathroom the next morning.

I am not sure if it has a fall detection feature but my mom went with an Apple watch as it was cheaper for that than the button system she did have.  It is programmed to call my brother and I and it will give her gas location.

Oh that's a good idea!  I googled and found out that there are some fall detection apps, too!

The main thing (after they decide to actually wear it, LOL), is who answers the phone and what do they do then.  I like ADT's service areas and their backup coverage if one of their (many) call centers is knocked out, say by a natural disaster.

If you can find a really good security specialist with ADT, they are good at advising you.  Granted, they are sales guys, but you want one that is an employee of the firm, not a contractor, and preferably one of their few hundred actual expert designers.

ADT does have fall detection, and they have those cameras and remote intercoms, so with a full on system you can dialogue with the person if they have fallen at home.  Plus, they have responses to fire and to break ins as well.  The fire thing becomes increasingly important as folks get forgetful.

Having said that, ADT calls down through a list of designees, and if no one answers, they call the local authorities.  So you have to be sure that there ARE local authorities to call.  Up near our cabin last year a firm (probably ADT, don't know for sure) called through the list to report a break in at a vacant cabin, and then fell back on the sheriff's department.  Headquarters is 50 minutes away, so they called the US Forest Service, which failed to do anything about it.  Half an hour later the hopped up guy who broke into the cabin decided to barbeque something under the main deck, and set the place on fire.  THEN the fire trucks WERE called, and responded immediately, but that cabin was a total loss and the one next door was severely damaged as well.  This was completely preventable if the authorities had responded to the break in.  So in rural areas that is sometimes the weak link in the chain, and it's important to think that through before investing.

I have seen various TV commercials (U.S. TV channel) for things like this. The Fall Detection is something I think would be more problematic.

Some years ago, when our former ISP had Fox News Channel, when the viewers in the USA were getting commercials, we (overseas viewers) were shown "Extras".

One of them had to do with some parents (I believe in the Kansas City area) who wanted their kids to be able to roam the neighborhood, as they did when they were kids, but with limits as to how far they could go.  There was also a phone in it.

The thing that impressed me about their invention was that it is like a plastic band that the kid cannot take off.

IF there is any possibility that your mother would not wear something else, 100% of the time, I believe having something like that, that she cannot take off, could prove to be a blessing for her.

Hopefully, she will never need to use such a device, but if she does, it needs to be on her so she can use it.
