kristin0713
We are getting the kids laptops for this next school year. I’m thinking today would be a good day to do it! But I know nothing about non-Apple computers. I hoping for under $200 (way under would be great if it’s a good prime deal!!) and lightweight. They need to be able to do some online classes and Prodigy math. No other gaming. Shouldn't be too hard, right? What should I look for? RootAnn
I don't know any of the answers to your questions. Would a Chromebook work? You might also keep an eye on Target - who is doing their own one-day sale on the 17th to compete with Amazon's sale.
kristin0713
I have been researching like mad and I still don't know what to get. Can they access our movies through a chromebook? Movies from Prime Video, iTunes, Movies Anywhere? The chrome books are definitely at the right price point and I was looking at some hybrid models that can flip around to be a tablet. That's ideal. but I don't understand all they can do with them.
8filltheheart
Can you go to a Staples, Best Buy, or Office Depot? You could go in and talk to someone in the store about the different features and what all they can do.
KellyMama
One thing to consider is the available memory of the laptop. We got some reasonably priced HP laptops for our high schoolers last year but have had headaches trying to do windows updates etc.due to the lack of internal storage. Thankfully DH is a computer guru and has been able to rig it with external drives and uninstalling factory installed "bloat ware" that we didn't need, but for sure check the amount of storage available. SebastianCat
Chromebooks, from what I understand, cannot use Microsoft Office products, so keep that in mind if your kids will need to use Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.) for their online classes. (Someone more educated on Chromebooks is welcome to correct me if I am wrong.) I was in the market for a new laptop and bought this one yesterday when the Prime Day deals began. I don't need it to do much other than general computing, exporting my display to a TV via HDMI for the co-op class I teach, but I definitely needed Microsoft Office. My initial budget was $300 but when I started researching, I figured out that by going up to the $370-380 price range, I'd get a faster processor, more memory, a bigger hard drive, and in general, a laptop that won't be obsolete or run out of storage with the first Windows upgrade. The laptop I bought was one of the models I was considering, with an initial price of $379, on sale for $329 for Prime Day.
