PeterPan
https://www.proedinc.com/Products/20194/cooking-to-learn-1-integrated-reading-and-writing-activities-ebook.aspx That link is at ProEd, but I found it looking through https://www.wiesereducational.com/products/cooking-to-learn-px1431.htm following rabbit trails about AGS texts. These books are high interest, use lots of visuals, and provide the sequence of steps which then turns into comprehension questions, cloze exercises, and narrative building work. It looks right about where my ds is, and we'd be getting some bonus practical living skills!

PeterPan
I know, don't they? And really, they're structured enough I could have a worker come in and do them or I could do them myself. I'm just over the moon. I so totally need to go through that Wieser site and look for more stuff. Actually part of it is that I've spent a lot of time digging through Linguisystems and NOT digging through ProEd Inc, even though Linguisystems is now owned by ProEd. ProEd just has so much that is in the weeds and not useful. I just feel dumb that I hadn't dug in there and found it myself. But yeah, such a killer way to work on skills we're trying to target. Highly motivating, great for actual work on skills. AND did you see that book 3 steps it up and hits world geography? Yup, lol.
