Bay Lake Mom
I'm considering using Elemental Science Earth Science this fall. My youngest is clearly in the Grammar stage (8 yo / 2nd grade with LD), but my soon to be 10 yo (5th grader) would probably fit best in the Logic stage. I'm not sure which level to choose. I've read that they are not synced up because the Logic stage goes deeper in study for the various topics, so I would either have to choose one level or deal with them covering different topics at different times. I want them to both be challenged and learn, but not be overwhelmed. Has anyone here had experience with both Grammar and Logic levels of Elemental Earth Science? Is the Grammar level worth it for a 10 yo or would it be worth it to try and juggle both levels? I'm most worried about my 10 yo not being challenged enough. However my youngest struggles a lot if she's overwhelmed... Thoughts?
nixpix5
Your 10 year old won't be challenged with the grammar stage level. It is even too basic for my 7 and 8 year olds. Let me give you an example of week 1 in grammar so you can get a sense of what he would be doing. The science demonstration (not experiment) uses a raw egg and a hard boiled egg to understand how earth's composition affects motion from Janice Van Cleaves science book. Reading is from Basher Science and Discover Science Planet Earth. Both super basic. Discussion questions are things like What does Earth look like from space? What is a continent? What is the atmosphere made of? What are the three main parts of earth? What is the crust, core, mantle etc. The additional readings are things like The Magic School Bus. There is a narration, copywork and dictation. The vocabulary is "Continent" The projects are a model planet and a model moon. Coloring pages and labeling continents. Memorizing the continents. That is the basic set up for every week. I really dislike the curriculum but others seem to enjoy it so I think it is a personal choice but I definitely think it is subpar for a 10 year old. Bay Lake Mom
Nixpix5, thank you for the feedback. I guess I should look further into Logic stage or just follow WTM recommendations. Hmmm.

You could always just choose a couple extra books on each topic to make it more meaty for your 10 year old and even google some more challenging experiments. One really neat experiment book that would be great for a 10 year old doing Earth Science is Geology Rocks! I believe it is out of print but you can get it for super cheap on Amazon. I just did it because I had to replace mine after loaning it out and not getting it back. The activities are really fun, easy and hit the concepts home well. It has information a 10 year old could read and it could be a great resource to bulk up the Grammar curriculum if you end up going that route.
Bay Lake Mom
So, I’ve decided to use Elemental Earth Science only with my youngest (8yo with delays). My older dd decided she REALLY wants to study Anatomy, so she’ll work through the Apologia text. If she finishes before the end of year, we’ll start working through WTM recs. Thank you for your ideas. It helped me make my decisions.
