AFwife Claire
We have a Brother laser printer/copier/scanner for several years now that I've loved. It is time to replace the black toner cartridge, and I had ordered one (a refurbished one) awhile ago, so I used that. I've replaced all the cartridges several times now, always using off-brand cartridges, and I've never had any problems. But this time, the "change black toner" error message came back up as soon as I closed up everything, and the printer "thought" about it. So I ordered another replacement cartridge, from a different vendor. It wasn't from the brand I prefer, since that would have taken a week to get here, even with prime. That one got here today, I replaced it--and you guessed it, same error message still. Grrrr. So do you think it is more likely that both cartridges were just duds (which is theoretically possible--at least with the second one, it did get some bad reviews, and I can't remember about the first one), and I should just bite the bullet and buy the expensive name brand Brother cartridge, or that the printer is screwed up and will never accept anther black cartridge, in which case I certainly shouldn't waste money on a new cartridge! Electronics . . . what a complete pain in the patootie!
mamaraby
Which printer? Have you looked to see if you can manually reset the toner cartridge? I have reset the toner cartridges on my color laser a couple of times since getting it and they’re still printing.
klmama
Have you turned off the printer completely and restarted it? Sometimes these electronic things just get confused....
EmseB
I would see if your printer has a cycle to clean the printer heads or the ink jets or whatever they're called.

Thank you so much! 1

Yes, I was going to say that you need the code. That happened to me once and I was actually using an Brother toner. I called them and they gave me the code. Good to know that you can likely find it online if you need it.

Glad it worked! This can happen with non-OEM cartridges. I find that there’s still toner left even after the printer says it needs new toner. Try resetting next time it says it needs new toner. It’s likely you can get more pages out of it. ?
