The World in Ancient Times by Oxford University Press

Recommended Posts

In my never-ending research regarding my dd's first foray into high school next year, I came across a recommendation for this series of books. I've been around the world and back again regarding what curriculum or resources to use for her study of ancient history next year--from WTMA to MFW to Biblioplan to Sonlight. Each of these has its merits but also its own particular challenges to me. I'm really intrigued by The World in Ancient Times series as a spine and am wondering if it is too light to be considered high school level. Does anyone have any experience in using this as a high school resource?

We used the entire series in 5th and the following one (Medieval series) in 6th. I personally thought they were solidly middle grade and would be too light for high school. They're fabulous books and very engaging and interesting, but I know they also offer IB level books which are high school level. We used parts of their IB History of the Americas book, and it was good too. You can search for "IB" on their site: https://global.oup.com/academic/search?q=IB&q=IB&subjectcode1=1793239|AHU00010&lang=en&cc=us

The Pages from History series is high school or higher--you could look at that. I don't think there anything for ancient history though. The books are all original documents--speeches, letters, photographs, etc. with short discussions in between. So a different format than the OUP World in Ancient Times.

FYI--I was leafing through the WWII text the other day from Pages from History and there was a story told by a Chinese woman who was assaulted. So pre-screen if this would be a trigger or of concern.  https://global.oup.com/academic/content/series/p/pages-from-history-ph/?cc=us&lang=en&
