Which Spanish curriculum for a 7th grader?

Recommended Posts

My 7th grade boy has been doing Latin for 3 years (GSWL for 1st year, then we split up Big Book 1 over the last two years), but he's pushing to start learning Spanish instead of continuing on with Big Book 2.  Any recommendations??  GSWL was a great format for him.  He picked it up really quickly.  If there's anything similar for Spanish, I'd love to know!  Thanks!

I should also mention I'm looking for a series that he can stick with to master Spanish through his high school years.  I know William Linney also wrote "Getting Started with Spanish," but I'm concerned that it's only one book.  Then we'd have to find a good book to transition to when we're done with the first one.  I'd prefer to stick with one series.

insertcreativenamehere, funny that you wrote that as I was writing the response above.  Do you know if Linney plans on writing higher levels?  Or is it always just going to be the standalone book?  I found it frustrating when we were done with GSWL to try and find a curriculum that would pick up where that left off.  He ended up having to review a lot because every book teaches in slightly different order.

We're starting Beginning Spanish Grammar from McGraw-hill next year for 6th grade. I've got the book broken down into three sections, so it should last us through 8th grade. The plan is to add in some additional vocabulary and supplement with Duolingo.

I will say that the book definitely takes some teacher planning, preferably from a teacher who is familiar with Spanish, to make it effective. It's not open and go IMO.

I really love the look of this series, but it is very pricey: Basic Spanish by Arnaiz and Intermediate Spanish by Wilkie. I do speak a little Spanish, and it looks like these would be easy to teach from and build at a slow and steady pace without too much vocab all at once.

I'm still trying to decide what to use next year with my 6th grader. I have GSWS which I think we could blow through quickly while learning some basic vocab and then jump into the series above (if I can pull the trigger) or maybe the McGraw-Hill text that YodaGirl mentioned which also looks very good.
