What is everyone’s favorite resource for logic stage science? I’ve used and enjoyed BFSU, but I’m just not feeling inspired to use it anymore.

I have been relaxed and interest led in science through the middle school years, with library books and documentaries. If they were willing to set up and perform an experiment or a project themselves I would get supplies. They picked which topics to learn about each year.

Science has been much more relaxing in middle school and I haven't been making myself crazy or feeling guilty about not doing lots of science experiments and demonstrations. Adding in one larger science project each year or entering a science fair is fun for these middle years. We did do a lot of fun field trips that were related to their science interests as well. My kids picked topics on ecology, geology, physics, astronomy, and chemistry. I figured science was about to get pretty formal for high school and fairly prescribed for us (we plan to do the usual biology, chemistry, physics via textbook for high school) so we kept it more informal in middle school.

We use BJU distance learning online for grades 6-8. These are the best science programs I have seen for middle school. This year our third child started the earth science program. (If a program makes it to my third kid, then I know it is definitely good.) These courses are in-depth and thorough, and they make my life so much easier.

Another option (if you don’t mind spending a lot of money) is Johns Hopkins CTY program. You child has to test into it to be able to enroll in classes, but the ones my daughter has taken from them in middle school have been excellent. They are secular, of course.

I'd stick with BFSU.  I went through all 3 volumes with my kids and I feel like it prepared them really well for high school science.

My 7th grader is enjoying RSO Biology 2. I feel like it's very thorough for middle school and has interesting activities.  We will be using RSO Astronomy 2 next year.

I will say RSO Bio 2 was great for my DS in 5th grade. He loves biology, and joined my co-op class for 12-16 yr olds using this text (the older kids used other texts). In this instance it was still interest driven. It is a great middle grade program.
