LMD
Just a curious question. My youngest child is 4. I breastfed him until around 14 months. I still have milk, leakage and soreness pretty often. In fact, from breastfeeding my first child 12 years ago, the milk has never fully gone away. Doctors seem pretty unconcerned. I've had a mammogram and breast ultrasounds within the past couple of years so I don't suspect anything serious (my sister had breast cancer at age 29). I'm 33 and have borderline pcos according to a fertility specialist a decade ago. The constant tenderness and random leaking is getting on my nerves!
eternalsummer
Wow! For me, maybe a week, probably not that long.

El...
Two. Years. Two years! Nursed until age 2, and had some visible milk secretions until the kid's 4th birthday. I have no idea if that's common. My mother, who nursed many children, was not surprised. I think I'm fairly normal, hormonally.

eternalsummer
Well you would be very useful in an inawoods apocalypse situation in which someone else bore a child, then died in childbirth, and there were no other nursing mothers. So there's that. :)

So there's that. :) Lol! I have often thought that I could have made a killing in the time of wet nursing... In an apocalypse I'll be rocking in the corner or taking my cyanide pill, no thanks. Honestly, it's getting annoying and I'm sick of being sore!
eternalsummer
Oh, maybe I should note that I've only weaned babies while pregnant (except for my first two, but that was almost 10 years ago).
countrygal
I still have milk but very little and it doesn't leak and it's been about 8 months since weaning. You can have your prolactin levels drawn and I think they can give you something to lower it... Maybe hormones? I think it's harmless, though. Just annoying!
Rachel
A couple years, which was super annoying because I never produced enough milk to fully feed my children beyond 6 months. But the last little bit just lingered and lingered. I do not have PCOS.
LMD
I've always weaned before falling pregnant again, the quickest was about 9 months from weaning until pregnancy. I don't tend to fall pregnant easily - only one of my children was conceived without intervention. Pregnancy had no effect, except to re-increase the volume! Anyway, just curious really! Thanks for the replies guys!

katilac
I didn't routinely have milk after a few months, but the hungry cry of a baby caused a let down response for years.
El...
Thanks for your reply! Did it just randomly stop? Yes, it was only a little after a few months, and a few drops for the last six months before it stopped.
Crimson Wife
I didn't routinely have milk after a few months, but the hungry cry of a baby caused a let down response for years. Yes, ugh! Not enough to leak but I could feel that sensation like my body was really trying to produce milk for that hungry infant. Lawyer&Mom
I usually run out of milk before I stop nursing, but I still get that let down feeling, milk or no milk!
Momto6inIN
I didn't routinely have milk after a few months, but the hungry cry of a baby caused a let down response for years. Only had real milk for 4-5 months after weaning. But my "baby" is 6 and to this day when I hear/smell a newborn I still feel a let down! Bodies are weird. kbutton
I know one woman that made comments about possibly being able to breastfeed her grandchildren if her pregnant daughter couldn't--she still had some milk production 20 some years after giving birth.
Elizabeth86
Idk because I "breastfed" long after my milk dried up from being pregnant. They would comfort nurse, but I am sure I wasn't making milk anymore.
AimeeM
I breastfed two boys for almost 7 years, between the two of them. (No real break between, either, as I weaned the Middle Boy when I was almost due with Youngest Boy, who obviously took over immediately.) I haven't breastfed a child in going on 2 years now, and am still lactating. Fun times :P
Terabith
My mother did until menopause. I did until I had massive breast reduction surgery and severed the ducts and such all.

kitten18
Years. My DS is 12, he stopped nursing when he was 2 and until just recently I would sometimes have a tiny bit of dried milk in my nipples. TMI? 😳😂
happypamama
I don’t leak any more, but it’s been 14 months since I stopped actively trying to produce milk and closer to 15 months since I nursed anyone (after nursing for almost 15 years straight, including through decreases in supply while pregnant), and I can still express a tiny bit. TravelingChris
I never breastfed but ended up with leaking milk at one point. That sent the doctors on a hunt as to what was wrong. I had a cat scan, I believe of my pituitary gland, etc. It turned out that it was a side effect of a beta blocker I was put on to try to prevent migraines.
