College Checklist - Heading into 11th grade - what should we be doing?

Recommended Posts

So last semester of 10th grade here. Planning for 11th grade. Getting closer to college apps and the whole she-bang in 12th.

What should we be doing to get ready for that going into summer between 10th-11th and headed into 11th grade?

(Here is what we've done - what am I missing?)

__X__  TAKEN PSAT IN 9th / 10th

__X__  PLANS TO TAKE PSAT in 11th

__X__  PLANS TO TAKE SAT in NOV 11th (after PSAT)

_____  HOW SHOULD WE BEST PREPARE FOR SAT? WHEN DO WE START STUDYING?

_____  WHEN SHOULD WE PLAN TO TAKE ACT? AND WHEN WOULD WE PREP FOR THAT?

__X__  HAS SOME LOR WRITERS IN MIND CONTINUING RELATIONSHIPS WITH

__X___  EXPERIENCE WITH APs / SAT IIs 9th & 10th

Am I missing anything else?

Please help me add to the list, things I may have forgotten. :-)

Here are some suggestions-

1. Begin to make a list of college's that meet your interest/academic/financial criteria

2. Schedule College Visits to schools in your list from above

3. Write a draft resume/list of awards & achievements that can be referenced when applying to schools

DD is beginning to look at more universities and she  has begun to receive emails from some of them, as a result of the PSAT she took last October. She is, I think, frustrated, or worried, that she has not selected a Major. She is torn between a STEM career and Arts. Totally different...  She is in the process of requesting Letters of Recommendation and a Transcript, so she can (hopefully) attend a University Summer Camp in the USA, this year, and be one of the students selected for that.

So, to answer your questions, on the PSAT/SAT I would probably concentrate on KHAN Academy, since they have direct input from CollegeBoard.org   That's what I suggested to my DD.  For the PreACT (is that the name) and the ACT, I'm not sure.  You can Google that.

I would just try to keep your student calm and just keep making progress towards high school graduation and university admittance.

Decide how much you can realistically afford and start doing research on schools in geographic areas that she is interested in.

Get a long list of possible colleges going and do as many 'virtual tours' online to weed out any that don't look like a fit & cross those off.

Life skills.

Some IRL wise homeschool moms advised me to remember teaching life skills.  They will need it when they go off to college (or eventually when they move out.).  Organizing, laundry, cooking, basic cleaning, etc.

Deadlines.  These same moms all told me stories about their dc who would ask the professor for extra time on assignments or do assignments differently than instructed.  College isn't homeschool.  Learn what the profs want and do it that way and on time.

Where are your extracurrirculars?  As I understand it, every college believes a student can get straight "A' if that is all that they do.  They rather have a B+ student with extensive outside activities, because that student could have been an "A" student with less distractions.
