VaKim
I would love something I could just lie on top of on the couch or bed that would massage my back. I don't really need heat, as that would trigger hot flashes right now. I looked on Amazon and saw mostly pillows or things for the back of chairs. Just a PSA - Don't google "massager that you can use in bed."
mmasc
Well, this probably isn’t exactly what you’re looking for, but I use a tennis ball placed inside one of DH’s crew socks. It’s extremely effective if you lie on it, or lean against the wall on it, hitting all of the knots and tight muscles. I had a wonderful massage therapist recommend it to me years ago and I’ve used one ever since!

I had a wonderful massage therapist recommend it to me years ago and I’ve used one ever since! Yeah, I have heard of that. Sounds good, but I really want something passive. It is more for relaxation than for tight muscles. What I'd really love is if they'd invent a thing that would play with your hair. Now that is relaxing! Lol.
Stibalfamily
I like a hot pad, it relaxes my back muscles really well, but I wouldn't recommend that for someone dealing with hot flashes. I also use a medmessager but you need help using it. It's pretty great but it does make me itchy if I use it in the same spot for awhile. https://www.medmassager.com/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI09_Yo6Hj2AIVgYl-Ch0-_wXQEAAYASAAEgLyw_D_BwE I have this one too, I feel its a bit too intense with the rollers. If you go to Bed Bath and Beyond you can try them out, you may like it. https://www.amazon.com/Homedics-QRM-400H-Therapist-Quad-Roller-Massaging/dp/B000QTSVWO/ref=sr_1_2_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1516338824&sr=8-2&keywords=chair+massager+homedics Here is a vibrating one that is no longer available. I like it but again, it makes me itchy. https://www.amazon.com/Homedics-VC-150-Revitalizer-Massage-Cushion/dp/B00170BITY/ref=sr_1_29_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1516339180&sr=8-29&keywords=chair+massager+homedics
KungFuPanda
Those things that go in chairs can be laid flat and are a bit flexible. You might need a small pillow under it to get it to contour to the small things f your back, but there’s no reason why you can’t just lie on it rather than propping it in a chair.
