Sam's abrutly closing 63 stores

Recommended Posts

WARN mandates 60 days pay for workers from large companies who work more than 20 hours a week.

This isn't Walmart being nice, this is  Federal law. The statement indicates that they are doing what is required (a/k/a the minimum required) by that federal statute.

Does WARN only apply to hourly workers?

No, there is no difference between exempt and non-exempt.  Data sheet

For mass layoffs impacts more than 500 people in large-scale companies.

It has only been law since 1988.

I think more and more grocery stores are only willing to operate where they have a high level of traffic.  They know people have to eat, so stores expect people to travel to them.  Rather than have more store in less trafficked locations, they prefer the mega-store that is so crowded one can hardly shop.  At least this seems to be the way things are where I live.  All the stores that are open are packed at nearly all times, yet the businesses won't open new ones for whatever reasons.

I'm not surprised with the two that are closing in my state. Both in areas with a lot of competition.

When I was working in a national security related field, they routinely laid off government contractors by having a guard and HR person with boxes show up. You packed your stuff and were escorted out. The idea was that then you couldn't take anything you weren't supposed to have or do anything you weren't supposed to do. They also offered 60 days of pay. They also fired people the same way.

When my position in the federal government was eliminated, I actually knew I was on the list six months before and then a month before the packets went out. They had job fairs and nearly all of the people were either gone or well along in the hiring process by the time the deadline hit. Thankfully the government was doing a lot of hiring then. Different situation than Sam's.

this was  how dd was laid off from a major corporation.  notice she was being laid off, and she didn't need to come back.  though I don't think they had her escorted out.  she was able to go back and visit (her badge was still active for 60 days, and they provided job hunting services.  she actually ended up with a better job than the one she left.)

she got her 60 days severance, and her boss kept looking for places he could put her so he didn't have to let her go. (it was a much loathed higher up who made the decision to h1b her position.)

I want to know where you people are that have a self-checkout at costco . . .. I regularly get to five different costcos in the seattle area (not including the two business centers to which dh occasionally drags me), and none do. (I grew up in kirkland, and my eye dr was in bear creek in redmond.)

What Sams employees are actually eligible for severance?

Yesterday, Walmart was saying they were giving bonuses to eligible employees, but the story sounded like an extremely small percentage we're eligible.

And the bonus is only for people who do not receive the pay raise.
