Laura Corin
Very interesting, I thought. Small sample though. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/29tx4RFjTKZnBsPv9R4W3DV/can-fizzy-drinks-make-you-eat-more
ktgrok
Interesting! I think I've noticed this in myself, when I drink diet soda or carbonated water vs crystal lite or iced tea. (so artificial sweeteners either way, so that isn't the difference)

(so artificial sweeteners either way, so that isn't the difference) I tend to drink sparkling water. Maybe I should switch to still if I want to drop a pound or two. J-rap
For me I think it's the opposite. Carbonation makes my stomach feel fuller.
wintermom
I do not care for fizzy drinks, as I just get annoying gas. I do notice, though, that when my stomach is stimulated or stimulating me (as in I notice it from being full or empty) I want to eat in an attempt to get rid of the feeling. Maybe the bubbles do something similar to people and they feel the need to eat?
regentrude
Never noticed that. Carbonated water has been our standard drink, but a few years ago I developed stomach problems and stopped drinking carbonated water. Kassia
For me I think it's the opposite. Carbonation makes my stomach feel fuller. Yes, me too. I drink way too much diet soda to keep from snacking.
Spryte
Interesting! We used to drink primarily bubbly water, but I was getting a lot of kidney stones (every 8 mos or so), and we started experimenting with flat water. In our very non-scientific study of one, we found that increasing bubbly water, for me, leads to more stones. Decreasing leads to less. It’s been two years now, since my last stone (knocking on wood) and I’ve been drinking a few more bubblies than normal. I should stop again. My doc didn’t have much light to shed on this bubbly water connection, saying only that it makes our kidneys work harder, or something like that, so take my random thoughts with a grain of salt. (Unless you regularly get stones, then it might be worth a shot to switch to flat, just in case!)
lauraw4321
Ugh. I always drink sparkling water. I had a serious coke habit, which became a serious diet coke habit, which became a serious la croix habit. Maybe this is motivation to switch to still. I hate still water. So blah. So not ice cold and in a can. So...boring.
kiana
Yes, me too. I drink way too much diet soda to keep from snacking. Ditto. But it's worth a try, for anyone -- to try both ways and see which works better.

So, I haven't had anything carbonated since mid-October. Plain water is so boring! I miss the carbonation!
gardenmom5
sugar will increase how much you eat - because it messes with the brain's ability to receive messages of satiation.
ktgrok
sugar will increase how much you eat - because it messes with the brain's ability to receive messages of satiation. Right but they said that plain, unsweetened seltzer also had an effect, but not as strong.
Alexigail
I switched to Hint water recently. I was always drinking carbonated water and heard some negative things about it.

Yeah, but they are claiming that plain seltzer water makes people hungrier. I guess cuz rats eat more. And we are just like rats so... I don't buy it.

ktgrok
sugar is in many things - not just fizzy drinks. Right...but the study was about fizzy drinks vs ones without fiz. Sugar is a whole other issue.

I don't buy it. The described study was not conducted on rats. That info was provided in the intro for why they did the experiment on humans. SparklyUnicorn
Ah ok...I didn't read the entire thing...obviously.... Just a little tired of everything being bad, poison, wrong, no good, gonna kill us, gonna make us eat more. Blah blah...
