I probably saw my grandfather for the last time today

Recommended Posts

I fed him. It was one of the sweetest moments of my life. Then after staying at the hospital for awhile, I went to his house for the last time. I walked through every room. The smell. Nothing will ever smell just like my grandparent’s house.

Just need to process.

I’m sorry.

Consider going back to the house and taking pictures of every room from different angles. Especially your grandfather’s “spotâ€.

I took a bunch of pictures. I think that’s why the smell was such a big deal. You can’t take a picture of a smell. (If someone figured out how to do that, they’d be a millionaire)

Then I started crying and had to talk myself out of it so I would stop plugging up my nose!

Oh, I'm so sorry.  That is really rough when you know it.   I'm glad you got to take pictures and be there to process.

Thank you for the tender moment with your grand-dad.

:grouphug:  :grouphug:  :grouphug:   Makes it hard to go into a new year. Sounds like he is a wonderful man and grandfather.

Could you perhaps ask for something fabric from the house, perhaps one of his shirts or a blanket?  Keep it where it won't get dirty enough to require washing, and you can wrap yourself in it from time to time when you need that little boost.

I'm glad you got to see him one last time.

It has been over 30 years since I last my grandmother.  I still really, really miss her and think about all the things I'd love to talk to her about and share with her.

(I never knew my other grandparents.)

You are so right about the smell of your grandparents' house. I can still remember both of "my" smells so well.

You know, I *knew* when it was the last time I would see my dad this side of eternity, and while it was hard, it was a blessing, too, because I got to say to him that I loved him and to thank him for the three big gifts he had given me.  Some people don't get to do that; I was glad I did.

Thinking of you...this is a hard thing.

I may have seen my grandmother for the last time too last week. She is 93 and several states away. She is doing okay, but it is touch and go when she gets sick which happens frequently. When I hugged her for the last time before we left, I wondered if I would ever smell that smell again.
