So.....If I want to learn to play chess

A friend of mine has on her bucket list to learn to play chess this upcoming year.  I have never played chess....not even watched a game being played.  Neither of us has the slightest idea of how to play.

I saw this on Amazon.  Would this be worth it? https://www.amazon.com/Chess-Teacher-styles-may-vary/dp/B00000JBMZ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1514162650&sr=8-3&keywords=learn+to+play+chess  It has pieces that teach you which way each piece can move.  I know it is a cheap set but would the directions on each piece be helpful to 2 almost 50s moms with tired brains?

Are there any good books we could get from the library?  I am not a big game person and don't want to put a lot of money into this but if we are going to learn we need the easiest, simplest, chess for dummies method.

I suggest this set for beginners - it has cards you can use until you don't need them anymore.  https://www.amazon.com/Winning-Moves-Games-1091-Stress/dp/B0007Q1IO4/ref=sr_1_2?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1514163387&sr=1-2&keywords=no+stress+chess

Also, a chess app or online game is probably the best way since the computer won't let you make an illegal move.

Thanks.  that looks good too.  If either of us decides we like chess we could always get a much better set to actually play with.

Mine learned to play through getting to know the pieces: the army of pawns, the skittish horses the knights ride, the sneaky bishop who moves at an angle, the castle walls that are straight and true (rooks)...

There's a movie that does a similar thing called A Little Game. It's about a girl learning the pieces through small stories.  If something like that appeals to you, it's worth checking out.

If it helps, I think the moves are VERY easy to learn quickly, whatever you use. It's the strategy that takes time to master. (Which I have not, lol.)

I can offer a suggestion, not as a chess expert, but as the mother of one. (Yes, Expert is an actual title, lol.) I agree with Carrie that it takes a matter of minutes to learn how each piece moves. And beckyjo's advice about apps is spot on -- chess.com is a wonderful, reliable website, free except for more advanced stuff.

As for chess sets, players tend to have simpler club sets, costing under $15. Not all tournaments supply sets, so portability is key -- roll up board and not too heavy pieces. Here is a selection:

USCF also has lots of chess stuff for sale.

I have ordered from wholesale chess many times, ditto USCF -- both are great.

I don't play chess, either. But my son takes chess lessons and he gets assigned to do chess puzzles, fast and slow chess games, and watch videos at Chesskid.com as homework. If you don't mind the Chess"kid" part, I think it's a decent site to learn and improve.

Enjoy!
