Travelling to Canada: Coat Recommendations?

It would depend what kind of travel, I think.

For a mostly urban hotel stays/conference centre/short taxi ride type trip: don't buy anything special, just bring the warmest jacket you already own with a sweater/fleece underneath.

For a trip where he will be driving himself anything beyond short urban trips:  true winter gear is more important for safety and comfort.  Real winter boots (like Sorels), mitts, insulated coat/parka, and a toque.

and a men's "suit" scarf (will keep his neck warm.  and if you layer both ends across the chest underneath the coat - it will help keep the body warmer too.) and driving weight gloves.

eta: clarifying.

It'll be very cold and lots of snow. I'd suspect that footwear will be more of an issue than coat, though. Guys don't tend to care as much about freezing their bodies, but they do care about their fancy shoes getting wrecked from the salt on roads and sidewalks, or slipping on ice and snow. Tell your dh to wear different shoes for outdoors than his expensive leather shoes. They don't even have to be boots, just runners or something he doesn't care too much about.
