common app recommendation

Recommended Posts

I am working on the counselor part of the common app.  Do you write a recommendation for your student?  He is planning to have 2 other recommendation letters so I am not sure whether it would be necessary/helpful.  Will colleges just look at it as his mom writing a letter or will it reflect negatively if I don't write one?

Yes, from my understanding this is your opportunity to go into detail on aspects of your kid that are important but may not be highlighted anywhere else.

Typically, the high school guidance counselor writes a letter. I used the opportunity to explain more about my students' personalities, their passions, their special character traits, what makes them tick, and why I think they will do well at college. I, as their mom, know these things better than a school guidance counselor with 200 students to write for.

The guidance counselor letter is not a praise of their academic achievements - those should speak for themselves. It is also not an explanation of the school philosophy - that goes into the school profile. For me, this was an opportunity to tell them about my kid. And for a school that puts thought into the composition of their freshman class, this is useful information. (For a school where admission is guaranteed by minimum test score it is unnecessary)

Yes, you write the counselor's letter.

I gave myself a crash course in how others here did it by doing a google search on        counselor site:welltrainedmind.com    --- this pulled up various posts here that mentioned the word "counselor". This tends to work better for me than using the search function on the forum, although trying that might work, too.

For example, here's a discussion from last month:  http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/656801-counselor-letter/     I checked out the links people gave, and noted lewelma's comment in post #6.

And another:  http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/533041-difficulty-with-the-counselor-letter/

Another that isn't Common App specific, but discusses whether to do a Counselor's letter:  http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/657005-include-counselor-letter-or-not/

There are many, many more posts.  The Common App has changed over the years, by the way, so the older posts might not be quite as helpful about specifics.
