Teen drivers in Texas -- can anyone help me?

Recommended Posts

I'm hearing conflicting reports on this, and I can't even find a definite answer at my car insurance's website.

I'm trying to determine if a teen driver with a permit in the state of Texas needs his own insurance or if he can just drive on his parents' insurance until he receives a license. I've heard that both are true. Or does it perhaps vary with the insurance company? (We have USAA, in case anyone out there knows that answer.)

Thanks for any help you can give me. (And I'll be happy to be the Rep Fairy for anyone who can help me out!);)

I can't be positive, but I was a teen driver in Texas and I am pretty sure I was on my parent's insurance. My parents always took care of the insurance, so I can not be positive.

We have USAA also. I love them. They should be able to answer your question if no one here can. I fear the time my kids learn to drive and I have a lot of years before that!

I don't remember. I think it might be up to the agent. You should call your agent to be sure. I do remember though, that when they get their license, they should have their own insurance and not be on mom and dad's. The reason for this is if they cause an accident, the other party can't sue mom and dad.

....so whatever your agent tells you would be right.

Thanks, everybody!

I love USAA, too. They're a great company and the only time another agency asked us to consider them (when we went with Farm Bureau for our house insurance), they were amazed by the rates.

My son is so funny. Dh was hit by an uninsured driver last week, and I guess ds has heard us 'talk up' USAA enough over the years. He said, "I sure am glad Granddaddy was military so you could have USAA and I can have them one day, too. You just can't beat them!" This from an 11 year old.;)

My daughter turns 15 tomorrow and has been pestering us about that whole driving thing, so I figured it was time to look into it.

Positive rep points all around!:p

Thanks again!

We live in Texas and have USAA. We have never had to add our children to our insurance until they have received their licenses. My oldes dd drove for over 2 years on her learner's permit and never had to be added to the insurance until she got her license. I'm now teaching my 4th child to drive and she has her learner's permit. We will add her to our insurance when she gets her license.

God bless,

Vicki
