Day 27 - What’s for dinner? - http://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/31-beginner-babysteps/day-27/

This is one of my weakest areas. I have belonged to meal planning services for YEARS. I like cooking too. I currently belong to a meal planning service. However I am starting to realize that all the meal planning services do, is give me an out. I still spend hours going through recipes and planning grocery lists. How many stores do you go to? I go to 3, sometimes more!

I am thinking what I really need to do is plan 3 months in advance. We are in fall now. Use fall produce and such and meal plan on that. I think my family needs 5 meals a week. Honestly between the occasional “Ack! How am I going to cook today?†days, and the celebrations that come every so often, and the “We have to eat left overs†nights that is how many meals I currently need.

So when I think of it that way I am really only looking at 60 meals a season that I need to figure out. Hmm… that doesn’t sound that bad. Then I can rotate through the meals every year and my family wouldn’t become tired of one thing or another.

Morning Routine

  • Get up and make your bed

  • get dressed to lace-up shoes, hair, face

  • Swish and Swipe your bathroom

  • Recognize negative voices and change them

  • Reboot your laundry

  • What’s for dinner?

  • Put out your Hot Spots for two minutes

  • Five-minute Room Rescue (pick a room). Set your timer and go!

  • Spend 15 Minutes decluttering each day. You can’t organize clutter!

  • Look at your Control Journal. Your Post-It Notes remind you

  • Read Your FlyLady Emails as a reward for doing your morning routine.

  •

Afternoon Routine

  • Eat lunch and drink your water

  • Start Dinner remember the side dishes

Before-Bed Routine

  • Keep your sink shining

  • Lay out your clothes for tomorrow

  • Put in a load of laundry

  • Check calendar for tomorrow’s dinner! Pull out of freezer.

  • Put out your Hot Spot.

  • Look at your Control Journal check list.

  • Time for bed; consider yourself tucked in!

Okay, I thought more about this yesterday and I have decided that the best way to make my rotating seasonal meal plan is to come up with 15 meal categories and then I would only need to come up with 4 meals for each category.

So here are my 15 categories. :D

  1. Instant pot
  2. Seafood
  3. Chicken
  4. Pasta
  5. Ground beef
  6. Stir Fry
  7. Mexican
  8. Italian
  9. Deep Fried
  10. Soup
  11. Special Occasion
  12. Fun Ideas
  13. Cassarole
  14. Grilling
  15. Meatless

I should say that we have a grill (Big Green Egg) that we can use year round. We also recently started using a deep fryer for occasional meals. When you have meal plan like this, we are talking 4 meals in each category over 3 months. Once a month (about) of deep frying will not kill us.

I will let you know when I am able to move beyond this point. ;) Hopefully today I will have a bit of time, but first I need to do my routines!

I just realized I don't have a category for pork. DH will not be happy! Hmm...

My needs are a bit different when it comes to meal planning. Making monthly lists didn't work. What works best for me is to pin recipes on Pinterest.

I have a "recipes to cook" board where I pin things that look interesting. If I am in a rut with my cooking,I look there for ideas. If I make a recipe and we all like it then I transfer the recipe to another board called "recipes I tried ".

If I am running short on time and need a tried and true recipe, then I look on my "recipes I tried " board. Because of smartphones I can do this even in the grocery store especially if I need to check to see what ingredients I need to buy. Some of my favorite recipes on my "recipes I tried " board have been memorized now.
