Common App: Add'l Info

I've read contradictory things about the Additional Information section:

I've read that you should almost never leave it blank.  Upload something, even if it's your student's resume, or a description of something that hasn't been described elsewhere, or an additional essay that wasn't asked for.

I've also read that you should not upload a resume, essay or anything else unless you need to.  Uploading your essay suggests their application structure is inadequate, and you should make every attempt to fit your information into their forms.

What do you think?

We used the additional info box to clarify my daughter's educational program (homeschooled, but through one of the unique Alaska public programs for homeschoolers. It can be confusing to understand how this works exactly, and different people function under this structure differently. Wanted readers to know how this worked for her.)

A young man whom I am helping with apps this year is using the box to clarify a complicated family situation that had some ramifications for his grades and academic choices.

I probably would not put an essay there without a very good reason, but using it to provide explanation for something that the application does not address otherwise is appropriate.

Ds is debating between uploading his resume vs just the sections not repeated elsewhere (which was academic summer programs attended).

Right now, he just has the info in there, not the whole resume.

Hoping he submits this weekend. So he needs to choose.

It is perfectly fine to leave it blank, especially if there is nothing obvious to add that

a) clearly enhances your application

b) does not repeat something you've already said

Do not upload a resume or anything that repeats what is already on the application. However, if you are unable to explain an unusual activity in the activities section, it is OK to write an explanation of just that one activity.
