Flu Shot-Pros and Cons

Recommended Posts

I don't think it's really effective enough to be worth it, IMO. And, like a lot of other people, the last time I got a flu shot, I was incredibly sick afterwards. DH is required by his job to get the flu vaccine and most years he is sick in the days and weeks after.

The kids and I have gotten the shot (or the spray the years before that) and we had at least 3 years of flu.

I keep getting the shot and not knowing if it is worth it.

Also, this study just came out. There was a significantly increased risk of spontaneous abortion after women had the h1n1 vaccine, and then the regular flu vaccine the following year. There are no safety studies on vaccines for pregnant women. Not that I am planning on getting pregnant again, but there's always the chance. Even before this study came out, I've read that women were blaming the flu vaccine for their SAB. Just not worth it, IMO.

Here's a commentary on the study.

I already got this year's flu shot when it came out in August.  No problems.  Sore arm, like always...but only that day.

I've been getting the flu shot for years, ever since my Dad got cancer.  They don't always "guess" right, but other than that, no issues.

Dh is an urgent care doc so we all get it in our house.  I had the flu once and that was enough!  It was miserable so I will do anything I can to reduce my risk of getting it again.  We have never had anything but a sore arm for a few hours.  Dh got his a few days ago and my two sons and I got ours today.  Dh has already seen several flu patients at the Urgent Care in the past two weeks....earlier than normal.

If anyone wants to check the "flu season" out via CDC, here's the link:

https://www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/index.htm

We're ending one "flu year" soon and about to start the next.  You can also do some of their links to get age, state (though PA doesn't have a site  :glare: ), info on the vax and more.  It's quite a useful site for anyone interested.

None of us have ever had a flu shot. About 6-7 years ago, dh and the kids all got it, but I didn't. They were sick for several days but not terribly sick. Dh took Tamiflu for a couple of days, but he said it made him feel very weird. So he quit taking it, and we didn't give it to the kids. None of us get sick very often with any virus, so I think we have decent immune systems.

My sister had a lady in her Sunday School class get the flu shot and then develop the Guillan-Barre syndrome. She was paralyzed for 6 weeks, and she ended having an amputation. She was convinced it was because of the shot.
