TinaBlue
I think I'm going to go with this for my 6th grader (physical, probably). I can buy a DVD with the labs on it, but I am a little worried that I'll get it and need an access code of some kind. Does anyone know if that's the case -- or should it work like any other DVD? Thanks!
Andromeda
I have the Physical Science labs DVD. It just works like any regular DVD. It actually looks like it used to be a VHS tape and was transferred to a DVD based on video quality and clothes worn by the kids. Having said that, I do like the DVD and think it is helpful. It goes over each experiment/demonstration and shows what the process is supposed to be like as well as the results.
TinaBlue
Thank you! Would you agree with Physical in 6th? I was reading past threads and reviews of the program, and there seem to be a lot of different opinions on which book is the most difficult and what order is best. Andromeda
You are very welcome! In my personal opinion, the books can be used in any order. I have all three Holt Science and Tech books, have used them or am in progress of using them with my student. My family is a big fan of the series and we learned about it on this board. Each text starts with the scientific method and has a lab that uses it for selecting a hypothesis, collecting data, plotting the data, and making a conclusion. I think that a typical 6th grader should be able to use any of the books (with guidance, naturally). There is some math in the Physical Science book, but much of it involves plugging values into a formula. If a student hasn't done this type of work before, they can be shown how. If your family enjoys science fiction, I recommend getting the optional Holt Science and Technology: Anthology of Science Fiction (ean 978-0030529474). All three books refer to it and assign a short story to go with some of the chapters. I think that the book is great just to read by itself, but it ties in quite well with the content taught. If I remember correctly, there is a short author bio, a nice short story, and comprehension questions. We sometimes use the questions, which are of the deeper "why" variety rather than "who did what." This is a fairly compact paperback volume with great stories (age appropriate content) from classic sci fi authors.
