shan74
Language arts is the hardest decision! It's our first year homeschooling my 2nd grader. He's reading at 6th grade level but hasn't had much grammar in ps, and resists writing. We plan to combine MCT and BraveWriter. Any tips for this? Do you recommend the optional MCT level 4, literature program? Would it be appropriate to start now? Thanks!

There are a lot of posters who have schooled or are schooling gifted kids. To you question, I would start a gifted second grader on the Island level. Unless he's had grammar before, Level 4 would probably contain references to grammar components he's not heard before. (Think gerund phrases.) My advice is to start on the Island level and go from there. As for Bravewriter, it's highly customizeable. It depends on what his output is. My gifted DS was resistant to writing so I would have started him on Jot it Down as it asks for very little as far as sustained output. You can make it more challenging by requiring more. Or it will be more challenging no matter what you do because of what your DS's knowledge base is. (I'm thinking of the animal project. I could see a GT kid go into great detail on a favorite animal.)
