Recommended Posts

Hi all. We're looking for a great oldie comedy (other genre suggestions good too) for tonight. Won't be eating until 8ish so need suggestions by 8:30 or 9:00. Anything 1930s, 40s, 50s good. We've seen a lot but give me your top 5 favs. TIA!! Total bonus if free on Amazon Prime :)

A lot of these are not comedies.  Sorry.  But I included them anyway.  And I don't know if these are old enough for you but I think most were in the 1950s.

Flower Drum Song

Rear Window

Singing in the Rain

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (original)

The Blob (original)

Forbidden Planet

The Searchers

African Queen

Bridge on the River Kwai

The Quiet Man

Roman Holiday

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

To Catch a Thief

A Star is Born

Father of the Bride  (Elizabeth Taylor)

House Boat (Carry Grant/Sophia Loren)

A couple of others:

Ben Hur

The Bridge Over the River Kwai

African Queen (not my favorite but it's usually one of those oldie goodies folks cite)

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington

The Inn of Sixth Happiness

The Yearling (with Gregory Peck)

Have you seen The Shop Around the Corner (or is the Little Shop Around the Corner?) I've always wanted to see it b/c I so love You've Got Mail.

I know this is late but, all comedies:

the great race - tony curtis, natalie wood, peter falk, jack lemon . .

how to marry a milionaire (marilyn monroe was such a good comedienne.)

diamonds are a girls best friend

the importance of being ernest - with micheal redgrave (the remake was awful.)

kind hearts and coronets (alec guiness)

the Philadelphia story - katharine hepburn, jimmy stewart, cary grant (witty reparte)

to catch a thief - cary grant, grace kelly

bringing up baby. (baby is a leopard)

eta: a funny thing happened on the way to the forum.  taken from the plays of plautus.  zero moestel, phil silvers . . . . .great for a  classical student . . . .

Adding in some of my favorites...

It Happened One Night  (Clark Gable)

-- On the night of my Sr Prom my boyfriend was out of town so my best friend came over and we watched 'old' movies until 5am-- he ended up becoming my DH!

Our favorites that night

Shenandoah (James Stewart)

The Cow Boys (John Wayne)

Rooster Cogburn (Original with John Wayne)
