Question for the older woman on the boards...

Recommended Posts

I am going to be 45 next month. About a year and a half ago, my periods began to be irregular. I always had my cycle every 28 days. Then, it started happening about every 2 weeks; then I missed one altogether and went 40 days. They finally started getting back to more of a regular basis, about every 20 to 25 days. I have always had a heavy flow and lately have also been passing clots (sorry if that's too gross:o). Well, Monday evening, I started bleeding fairly heavily. Then on Tuesday, I stopped. I have had a little spotting today and that's it.

Has anyone experienced this? Is this part of menopause? I'm due to see my GYN. My appointment isn't for another couple of months, though. Should I have it moved up? Thanks.

I had the same issues...and my GYN told me I needed a hysterectomy. I decided I didn't, LOL. I started using progesterone cream....and have been regular ever since....AND....my periods aren't bad at all now.

I changed doctors too, LOL!

back in the day, I had awful erratic, heavy periods. Turns out I also had a big fibroid that needed removal. Things settled down a bit after that. This was also pre-kids. Now I am pushing 49...and while the period itself is shorter, it can be very heavy for a day or so, and the cycle is getting erratic again (22 days last time....35 days and still waiting this month :-( sigh. Cold be fibroid again...could be age. Could be both. Time for chocolate

any periods being 2 weeks apart, but I did have unusual lengths and once went for over a year between periods.

No help from me as I'm experiencing the same thing at 43. My last 3 or 4 have been every 2 weeks, plus for the last 2 years I've gone from having short, light cycles to what you are describing. Some days I can't even leave the house.

You are not alone. It is a real pain.

Yes, it's part of perimenopause. I'm older than you and it started for me about your age.

I switched to all cotton, natural feminine products, a year or so ago, as I also have some skin issues that seemed to be aggrevated during my cycle and I felt that the products I was using were contributing. For me, this has not only helped my skin conditions, but I have also found that my flow has moderated more and become less erratic....so not sure if that's just chance or if the absence of chemicals has helped, but thought I'd mention it....

Dude, any chance to stop the bleeding, I'm so there. :) I'm only 35, but I had a hysterectomy at 24 and I DO NOT REGRET IT ONE BIT!!

If you know you won't be having any more kids, IMHO, there is no need for that accessory. :) The sooner they take it out, the better, and they did.

I had endo though, so I had a reason. :)

I guess I qualify as older at 55!! It is most likely menopause BUT it seems a little early. Do you know when your mom started it? I know that my periomenopause was plagued with clots and changes in schedule. You could just call your GYN and ask if it would make you feel more comfortable.

Really? This is the first time I have heard of the clots being part of periomenopause. That might explain my symptoms. I am 42 and my periods are getting very heavy, very painful and clotty. (I can't believe I am sharing this with the internet :o )

I wish I could just go through the change and be done with it.

I had those symptoms, and worse, before I was 40. I had the hysterectomy (happily, completely covered by insurance), after trying the Pill with no relief. I don't regret it for a minute. This has been the happiest [*counting on fingers*] 16 years of my adult life:D

FTR, there were some fibros, so there might have been a more serious reason, but still, I'm glad I did it.

Well, even though I really don't feel like an older woman yet, and I'm still having a monthly cycle without fail, I have had the clotting for a few years. I'm completely adament that there is no way in heck that I am going to be like my mother and my dad's sisters and have fibroids:eek:. Not in your life. So I was very happy to read that they are included in premenopausal symptoms. After doing some reading, I've put myself in that category rather than perimenopausal. Plus, on both sides of the family where there were no hysterectomies for fibroids, menopause occurred in the 50s.

One of the other posters mentioned that you might be too young, but I think that the age of menopause varies greatly. My mil was all done at 46. I've known women being as young as 37/38 and all done, with no hysterectomy (one had never had children, but two had.)

Same exact thing going on here - I'm 43.

Started about 8 months ago and exact same situation you are dealing with. I thought I'd be so clever to buy a Diva Cup about a year ago - got to use it for 3 cycles and then it was worthless when the clots began. Lovely! I work with many women 38-55 and it is very common of perimenopause. Good Luck!!!

I read your subject line, and thought you were talking specifically to me (*the* older woman on the boards! LOL).

Mine didn't go the way you are describing, but it was highly irregular before ceasing all together. You should probably mention this to your doctor if you are still concerned in a month or two.

this past summer I had an outpatient procedure called "Endometrial Ablation." This is absolutely the BEST thing I've ever done! The procedure takes 20 minutes. I was out of bed and walking around that afternoon and back to my normal schedule the next day. No pain pills needed.

No more periods! Ever! Life is great. I can't tell you how much I don't miss them.

These lovely symptoms started for me last year. I went to see my caregiver and she put me on the pill. I'd not been on the pill in 18 years....my symptoms went away and everything is nice and regular and last 3 short, light days. :) I know this isn't the answer for everyone, but it sure worked for me..as I hated being held prisoner in my house for 5 days of heavy flow. Yuck!;)

Yes, and I went to doc and had hormone levels checked . I had too much estrogen and not enough progesterone actually almost no progesterone. I am using a progesterone cream now and it has helped a lot! Go see a doc and get checked out, it's best not to guess and know for sure!

Certainly it isn't how it is supposed to be. There must be a cause for such heavy periods for everyone....

Every doctor wants to put women on the pill for this supposed cure all. I realize many women need this....but I bet there are plenty of them getting a hysterectomy when they don't need it. Those parts were put there for a reason...LOL, and just because you are not ovulating late in life...doesn't mean they are useless.....

I plan on keeping all my parts unless absolutely necessary otherwise!

Ahemmm, hope I didn't offend any of you lovely ladies older than 40;) I really don't tend to think of myself as "older" but am finding that there are many women younger than I am in my circle of friends. But, that's a good thing, right:). Keeps me YOUNG!

I called my doc, and they are in no hurry to move my appointment up. But, I do agree that I'd like to avoid surgery. I don't know if this is morbid or not, but somehow it is comforting to know I'm not alone.

uh -yup! I did go to the ob/gyn for a pap and ultrasound - nothing there. I joined WomentoWomen and use their vitamins and Herbal Equilibrium supplements. Progesterone cream helped for a cycle or 2 but I stayed on it tooooo long. Be careful about progesterone cream - it helps IF you need it. Can you get saliva testing to find out what your hormonal status is?
