Popular Post Chrysalis Academy
I'm bursting with joy, and she was ok with me sharing this here, since she has "grown up" with so many of the kids (and parents) on this board. Dd entered a Writing for Children contest on the Write the World blog, and she won first place!!! This is such a huge thing for her right now. Writing is her passion, a writer is both what she is now and what she wants to be when she grows up. And she's had such a tough year, with a chronic illness that developed almost a year ago that has made things seem very dark at times. This was a huge lift, for both of us. Here is what the judge said about her piece, and I think if I did this right the link will take you to the piece, if you're inclined to read it: BEST ENTRYWinkle and the Window by Laika For the short story writer, one of the hardest things to accomplish is to build a rich world in a compressed span of time. Laika’s story does this in style, immersing the reader into a mysterious world that lives beyond the story’s conclusion. The author shows a keen sense of how to provide just enough detail to create the scene, while withholding explanation in a way that allows the story to breathe. Like walking through moonlit woods at night, Laika’s story feels rich as much for what we can’t see (what is lurking in the margins) as for what she does reveal to us. Interestingly, her charming illustrations display the same economic yet evocative style. There is also depth to Winkle and the Window that I found touching. The story starts with a bewildered Winkle searching for his mother and father, but ends with the boy (with the help of a fox) rescuing his lost parents. This is a poignant turn that will resonate with many families: children look to parents for answers and parents assume it is their job to protect their children… but in truth, there are times when parents feel lost and it is often the magic of children that ends up being their salvation. Much like the fox shows Winkle the magical window in the stars, in just a few pages, Laika magically opens up a window onto a new world tantalizing enough that readers will want to crawl through again. Chrysalis Academy
Hurrah! Please tell her congratulations! And Congratulations to you too! Is this your older dd? I didn't realize that she was sick. I hope she is okay. Yes, it's dd14. She's developed a chronic illness over the past year, we're not entirely sure what it is, but it seems to involve dysautonomia (maybe POTS and/or EDS) and gut/food sensitivity issues. Plus pain - migraines & joint pain. It's completely changed her life, our lives. We're still struggling for a full diagnosis and coming up with a treatment plan. And 9th grade didn't go as planned - actually, it's still going.. But she writes almost every day, and still feels passionate about it, so I'm so happy that she got this recognition of all the hard work she puts into honing her craft. It means a lot to her.
