Biology and American History Textbook Recommendations?

Recommended Posts

My son will be studying Biology for science this year. He'll also be studying American History.  Does anyone have recommendations for something that is easy to understand for the biology and something more indepth for Am. History?

Thanks so much!

Miller Levine Biology with the schedule from Kolbe Academy.

I bought the workbook and annotated teacher edition of the workbook.  DS does the workbook instead of end of chapter questions, because I thought they were better questions.

We are using some of the labs from here: http://serendip.brynmawr.edu/sci_edu/waldron/

We also look for You Tube clips for some of the topics, like DNA.  This is one of our current favorite channels. Professor Dave Explains https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLybg94GvOJ9Fazvaf8unWl9J2soXCAvy4

We've enjoyed Apologia Biology with the student notebook & DVDs (our favorite part).

I'm in the same boat as you with choosing an American History for next year. We're planning on Dave Raymond' s American History through Compass Classroom. It's a streaming video course w/ pdf book downloads. He's quite interesting & we are able to get it as a bundle of 8 courses for $16/mo. The website has sample videos.

For Bio my son used this text with DIVE and we thought it was clear and, while not easy, certainly easy to understand - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0547219474/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

For US History we used The American Pageant 14th ed  - https://www.amazon.com/American-Pageant-David-M-Kennedy/dp/0547166540/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1500553205&sr=8-1&keywords=the+american+pageant+14th+edition

TAP also comes in an AP Edition which may have more in it. And there are newer editions but I was given this one so I went with it. IT went through the election of 2008, which I thought was far enough. I was able to buy the Guidebooks that went along with this edition. They had chapter summary, vocabulary, reviews that included multiple choice, t/f, matching, etc. There was also map work, short documents, and essay questions. We added several books - documents, opposing viewpoints, speeches, bios, lit, etc. I think it was an indepth year!

Just to give you a few more ideas:

In the past - my oldest used Johnson's History of the American People. Very in depth. We liked the slight removed pov - Johnson is British. Another daughter used Notgrass - not in depth. But we paired it with the Great Courses US History dvds and thought it worked well. I added a lot of additional reading for both girls - nf/f/bios/etc. And another daughter used The American School's US History - I think it was Amsco. It was way better than I had expected!

Only one of my girls took Bio and she used BJU with DIVE. Just more and harder than we needed. That doesn't mean it was not easy to understand, as she did well. But overall we found the other text more streamlined but still informative.

We will be using Paradigm Accelerated Curriculum for Biology this year.

Looks very easy to use and just what we needed!

We are also going to do their anatomy course and get the Exploring the World of Biology by John Hudson Tiner to fill it out a bit more.

I believe he is the author of this science program.

I have also heard some good reviews about their American History course, which looks like a 2 year course.

Same easy format.  The curriculum is divided into units so it comes with 6 Text paperback books and 6 corresponding Activity books.

The student reads the chapter and then answers the questions in the activity book.  It is basically meant to be done independently.

What I like is that it is not one huge book which can seem overwhelming to some.

It is written in a very engaging manner and it tells the student exactly what they need to know without a lot of extra words if you know what I mean.  Check out the samples on their website.
