Best songs to cause a 'good ole cry'

Recommended Posts

I am feeling sappy today and wondered what your favorite songs are that always make you grab a tissue? I love Mark Shultz for those types of songs (CC) he's got some doozies....My favorites are

Mark Shultz:

"He's My Son"

"Walking Her Home"

"When You Come Home"

Martina McBride has a few too that always make me tear up

"My Daughters Eyes" (funny since I don't even have a girl! lol)

"God's Will" (that one I have yet to make it through w/o crying)

I can't even read the words to this one without blubbering. Jimmy sings it with his brother Cameron singing backup. It is about their father's struggle with Alzheimer.

False Echoes

Jimmy Buffett

The skies over Cuba turned pink with the light

And the waterfront ritual began to ignite

All the ships in the harbour were warmed by the sun

Twenty-fifth of November, Nineteen twenty-one

On the old Chicamauga the signal jacks flew

And the message they spelled out caused a great ballyhoo

Every ship in Havana then hoisted away

All the pennants were flyin' on my dad's first birthday

(Chorus)

Enduring echoes call out from his past

Time ain't for savin', no, Time's not for that

Chasin' false echoes like a lost legionnaire

He waltzes on memories while he fades like a flare

Now his storybook childhood was not make-believe

On the decks of a tallship he was taught to achieve

Witnessed storms and starvation, natural wonders and force

Oh, the life of a sailor steers a wanderin' course

(Chorus)

Well, now life throws us curve balls we never can reach

He gave up the ocean but he lived by the beach

Where he raised up his family, taught us all to survive

Then the wind went away in 1995

Now the old Chicamauga has slipped by the way

She lies on the bottom of old Mobile Bay

Where the ghosts of his father and his brother are near

They protect him and tell him there's nothing to fear

'Cause it's family tradition we take to the sea

And it's a time in the future for Cameron and me

(Chorus)

The skies over Cuba were warmed by the sun

Twenty-fifth of November, 1921

Currently Amy Grant's "I will remember you"

ESP. on this youtube video tribute to Carolyn Scott & Rookie.

Rookie was a golden retriever & Carolyn Scott is a pioneer in musical dog sport. If you're a dog lover, you've got to watch it. And if you're not a dog lover, I think you should watch it too :D

(btw, that is a totally safe youtube page - I've never had any weird links come up on it, just more dog freestyle vids. )

It Is Well With My Soul! Oooh, that songs gives me shivers and tears when we sing it in church. It is so powerful, especially as it builds to the end. Here are the words:

I'm so sorry about your friends' baby. How neat that they had that song at her funeral. I've often prayed that I'd have the kind of strength that's spoken of in the song when faced with difficult times. It's so against my nature!

When my uncle was dying of cancer, my aunt asked me to sing "The Old Rugged Cross" at his funeral. I practiced a lot in the weeks prior and couldn't get through it without crying. I finally told her that I'd have to record it to be played because I just knew I'd never make it through the song live in the service. Somehow I got a decent rendition on tape.

Songs are so powerful, aren't they?

Yes, songs have a way to be so powerful. I pray for that kind of strength too, but know it's nothing I could ever muster up on my own. That kind of strength is something only God can give us.

"From This Moment On" with Shania Twain and Bryan White

I recently cut this for a wedding slideshow DVD. This was the song that played along with the ceremony pictures. It came out beautifully! I still can't watch it without tearing up.

There are others, many have already been mentioned, but this was the first one I thought of today.

The House at Pooh Corner by Kenny Loggins. I get to that last verse and :crying:

-Robin

::Sniff, Snort::..."C-c-c-ount...all...the...bees...::Sob::...in...the...hive!!"

Merciless.

Also, 1974 by Amy Grant (reminds me of meeting my husband, reconnecting with my relationship with God), and Time in a Bottle, by Jim Croce.

" 'Cause there never seems to be enough time to do the things you want to do once you find them..."

I've also been known to cry during "What a Fool Believes", and "Take it to the Limit"...but that's because they remind me of my dad. :-( (Might not work if you don't have that connection with those songs, lol.)

We also have friends who lost a baby at 37 weeks. This is the song we sang at the graveside, it's one we sang frequently at our church. I wish I could find it being sung for you to hear.

The Great Storm is Over

Bob Franke

The thunder and lightening gave voice to the night

The little small child cried out in her fright

Hush little baby a story I will tell

Of a love that has vanquished the powers of hell

Chorus

Hallelujah the great storm is over

Lift up your wings and fly

Hallelujah the great storm over

Lift up your wings and fly

Sweetness in the air and justice on the wind

Laughter in the house where the mourners have been

The deaf shall have music the blind have new light

The standards of death taken down by surprise

Chorus

Hallelujah the great storm is over

Release for the captives an end to the wars

Streams in the desert new hope for the poor

Little small children shall dance as they sing

And play with the bears and the lions in Spring

Chorus

Hallelujah the great storm is over

Hush little baby let go of your fears

Father loves his own and your mother is here

The babe fell asleep as the lantern did burn

The mother sang on 'till the bride groom's return

Chorus

Hallelujah the great storm is over . . .

Times of Your Life by Paul Anka and Grow Old With Me by John Lennon. My sister sang the latter at my wedding and there weren't many dry eyes. Mary Chapin Carpenter does a beautiful cover, but nothing, nothing compares to John doing it at his home just a few days before he died. Makes me bawl every time I hear it.

There are too many to list! Several of mine were listed previously, like Tim McGraw If You're Reading This and Jeremy Camp's This Man.

Others:

God Bless the USA - Lee Greenwood

Find Your Wings - Mark Harris (adding kleenex alert)

- Marc Cohn (don't attempt to listen unless you have kleenex)

- Casting Crowns

You Raise Me Up - Josh Groban

Several Christmas songs - Mary Did You Know,

,

Just a beautiful voice can make me cry. Yes, I'm emotional, but I have some sort of special attachment to music. :)

Some of mine are already listed here - In Christ Alone, most of the patriotic songs...

Also, the song about the child who (fuzzy details, it's been a while since I heard it) sees Jesus at church and remembers him as the man who was hiding behind the couch with her when the parents would fight. It's a country song...

And, oddly enough, I'll Fly Away.

"The Little Girl" - John Michael Montgomery

Here are the lyrics.

I've never heard it but just reading the lyrics makes me teary.
