Hunter
I just realized that my library is decreasing the amount of Overdrive books that they purchase and expecting us to use Hoopla instead. So I've been poking around Hoopla and there is more than I ever knew. We only get 10 items a month from Hoopla, though! If you use Hoopla, what have you found that is useful as curriculum? With Overdrive, we have 10 items out at a TIME, and can get new things if we return the ones we have finished. There is some great stuff at Hoopla, but 10 items a month is really restricting, especially if using short picture books and Bill Nye videos. We use it often, but we only get 8 a month, and have a bad habit of going through those 8 in the first two weeks. On several occasions, I returned my items, hoping to be able to get more, and then couldn't. Worst part was that I couldn't even get my items from that month back to at least re-read them for the remainder of the month!
GailV
Thanks! I usually can't find anything I'm interested in on Hoopla, so this will be fun to browse through. (I also can't get the Hoopla books to easily download onto all the devices that I prefer, so I tend to not spend a lot of time looking there.) We get 10 per month from Hoopla, 20 at a time from Overdrive -- but the Overdrive books are 7 day loans, so sometimes I feel like I'm in the reading Olympics over here trying to speed through. Edited to add: Aha, each episode of the Great Courses videos count as one borrow. Nice you can pick and choose, but could be annoying to have to wait months to get all the way through them. Hunter
If dependent on Hoopla as a main source, one episode of a video series with a 2 day borrow period isn't a smart choice. I'll be doing a lot less of that, now. I'll be looking for long ebooks with a 3 week borrow period. With Overdrive, there should be a setting in the App that allows you to increase the default borrow period from 7 to 14 days for ebooks. Unless a library has disabled that feature, and I don't think they can. With multiple library cards, signed into different devices, that would increase the number of items that can be borrowed a month. I have cards at more than one library. I use all of them for Overdrive, but need to see if any of the other libraries have Hoopla. All of them are cutting back at Overdrive, so even with all 3 cards, there are tons and tons of books that show up under the request to purchase area that I have no access to.
Hunter
Score! I had to mess around a bit, but one of my other library cards let me into Hoopla with another 10 borrows! I had to register under the library I actually got the card from even though I renewed it elsewhere the last time. And I needed to use a different e-mail than my main library card. It looks like individual libraries but not the whole network is offering Hoopla. If you are juggling multiple cards and are trying to have more than one Hoopla account, don't give up too easily if you get an error or negative response. Play with it a bit, with different libraries, email addresses, and devices.
Hunter
Yup, okay, searching by individual library, and not the main network website, I found Hoopla for my other card, too. I'm not sure I can access that account without traveling to that town and having that listed as my main library. I'm not sure how this all works, but play with it. Well, duh, why didn't I think of that? We have 3 cards in our system ... dh needs to get a card, obviously. Also, thanks for the tip about extending the Overdrive checkout time. I had a nonfiction book out a couple of weeks ago that had a line of holds waiting for it, and I think it scarred me  because I kept thinking about how it might be weeks before I'd get it back if I didn't finish it RIGHT THEN. Right now I just have fluffy fiction checked out, which is easy to finish in a few days ... or just figure I'll maybe finish it someday when I get another chance to check it out (I'm often okay with not ever finishing fluffy books).

Hunter
I think the default is set at 1 week for Overdrive, because some people cannot figure out how to return books. It allows them more access to the catalog each month. Having at least 2 accounts at Hoopla makes a huge difference in borrowing options! I'm still not at all happy about the slash of available books at Overdrive. I prefer the Overdrive app. I don't think of Hoopla as a replacement for Overdrive at all. I'm glad I KNOW what is up, but not happy with what IS up.
JoJosMom
Thank you for posting this, Hunter. I was unfamiliar with either of the resources that you mentioned. Turns out, our library has both! Plus a whole host of other digital resources I wasn't aware of. I :001_wub: our library! Hunter
Mango languages is pretty awesome if it is offered. It includes Ancient Greek and Latin and Biblical Hebrew. The courses are immersion, so are not great as the SPINE if wanting a traditional grammar based approach, but they make an awesome SUPPLEMENT for pronunciation. You can click over and over on a word and chant along with the software to learn hard to pronounce words. If you have limited wifi/data at home, you can download Manga content at public wifi and take it home to use it.
happypamama
Hoopla only lets us have 5 per month, but we have a lot of cards, so I can probably use those if need be.

I think you will need separate e-mail addresses for each Hoopla account.

I think you will need separate e-mail addresses for each Hoopla account. That could be a problem. The kids have cards and accounts, but because I'm ultimately responsible for returning what they check out, I use my email address for their accounts. But tbh, we have access to three library systems for physical materials, two plus the one that uses Hoopla for digital materials, and the Free Library of Philadelphia for free for digital stuff, and several carry Great Courses, so we have a lot of stuff at our disposal.
fourisenough
My library card allows 30 monthly downloads from Hoopla. So far, we've mostly used it for audiobooks, but have also watched two GC (How to Be a Superstar Student and Hiw to Understand Shakespeare) and a season of Bill Nye. Each episode is a download, so they add up quickly, but with 30 per month, I haven't run out yet.

You do not need to return Hoopla items. You will not need Hoopla to email you anything. Your Hoopla account e-mail does not need to match the e-mai the library is using for that card.

I am really hoping that my main library increases the number of downloads we are given a month if they are going to transition so much content to Hoopla. I have not checked the other two libraries. I need to be sure what number they allow.

You do not need to use the same email for Hoopla as what the library has on file. It is a good idea to have 1 device = 1 account. Logging in and out with different accounts sometimes doesn't work b/c the device thinks you've used your checkouts.
