Cecropia
A frivolous poll for Friday. [What I mean by "gingham" is that country-style checkered plaid pattern.] I'd have to choose polka dot. Gingham is cute and all that, but polka dot makes me smile!
trulycrabby
Neither. I'm over 50, so it's all solid colours.
Farrar
Gingham for picnic tablecloths and old fashioned grandmother dresses. Polka dots for all other things, especially popular art exhibits: http://www.npr.org/2017/03/01/516659735/priestess-of-polka-dots-yayoi-kusama-gives-gallerygoers-a-taste-of-infinity

Farrar
That was a great story! That tour better come near me 😠😠It was incredibly cool. I've been drawing dots on everything ever since. Getting in was crazy though. We really lucked into our tickets in an early release. Dh never managed to get any and didn't have time to stand in the daily line in hope. :(
Cinder
I don't care for either.

foxbridgeacademy
gingham is okay and polka dots are tolerated. I prefer paisley or plaid.
TechWife
Gingham gives me a headache if I look at it for too long. Of course, I didn't discover this until after our brand new gingham couch was delivered! It was the first piece of furniture we bought as a married couple. Good times! I voted polka dot because they are fun!
EMS83
Other. What's it for?
Cecropia
Other. What's it for? I was trying to decide on a ribbon for a gift box earlier. Polka dot won.
MercyA
Polka dots for all other things, especially popular art exhibits: http://www.npr.org/2017/03/01/516659735/priestess-of-polka-dots-yayoi-kusama-gives-gallerygoers-a-taste-of-infinity That looks really cool!! I had never heard of that artist before. Regarding the original question...I've been trying to nail down why I have a fondness for gingham. I think it might be because it was a popular fabric to use for dolls, stuffed animals, bedspreads, and other little girl things in the 70's. One of my favorite dolls, Fisher Price's Mary, wore a gingham dress. I still have her! :) Polka dots are not my favorite. They can be too formal, too preppy, too loud, or too trendy for me, depending. That said, when I was a little girl, my mom took one of her 1960's navy and white polka dot mini-skirt outfits and cut it down for me to wear to church. It was very silky and pretty and had a little red rose on the collar. My niece wore it many years later and it still looked classy.
Seasider
Polka dots always remind me of Princess Diana and Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. https://www.google.com/amp/s/emilyjanesimkins.wordpress.com/2011/02/22/modern-day-classics/amp/
Melissa in Australia
I have gingham curtains instead of cupboard doors. I would like doors but DH built the kitchen and he hasn't built the doors yet..... it has been 10 years..... I am thinking the doors might never be built...

lavender's green
Polka dots are fun and cute. Gingham is overwhelming to me. Although my baby looks cute as a button in her little gingham dress!
EMS83
Hmm. I'll say in general, gingham, but with many caveats and contingencies. ;) And leave it as other, lol.
Hyacinth
It depends on usage and context. But I do favor a brightly colored gingham for a toddler's dress. :)
footballmom
Love, love, love them both. They are not interchangeable for all applications, but love them equally.
SKL
Just wondering what they call "polka dots" in other languages ....
Suzanne in ABQ
Gingham is calming for me, probably because I had a gingham ruffled bedspread on my canopy bed when I was a girl. Polka dot makes me excited in an uncomfortable way.
