SAT Subject Test

Recommended Posts

My kid started in the wrong room and sat for an entire testing period waiting for the next testing time. Since he is ADD and we didn't bring caffeine or food or anything for the break because he was supposed to leave at the break time I wonder if I should just cancel the score. Sitting doing nothing for an hour probably didn't help his focus.  He is the kind of kid who will be 90% or 10% depending on if he can focus on the question long enough to understand what it says.

A good life lesson for him though.

My daughter took the general SAT with essay for the first time this morning.  She felt confident about most of the sections except the non-calculator one and the essay.  With the essay, she wrote 2 1/2 pages but wasn't sure if she was going in the right direction.  We'll know in July.

My daughter took the Biology-M.  She had time to spare to go back and review her answers, but she says it was challenging.  She said there wasn't as much anatomy and physiology as she would have thought would be on it, which disappointed her.  Overall, her feeling is that she "did ok".

My thoughts were that the test center should have had better signage and more helpful staff to direct the students and the few parents who stayed to help their child (ahem, me and 2 other parents).  I attempted to ask a staff member where the line was for SAT subject test takers, since he had just finished yelling at the kids that there was 1 line for SAT w/essay and another line for SAT w/o essay, and he rudely told me he couldn't help me before I could even ask the question!  We figured it out on our own, but not before being very turned off by his rudeness and the overall unhelpful and disorganized feeling of the location.  I expected more since this is the top high school in my area.

My dd felt very good about the Latin subject test. She had 15 minutes left at the end to go back and check her answers, which she was really pleased about. She said there were about 10 kids taking the subject tests and that she knew 2 of them and that the proctor was exceptionally nice. Her only complaint was that she spent 2 1/2 hours at the school to take a one-hour test.

Did you guys have the problem where College Board had shaded the book code wrong? It wasn't clear to me whether it was on all SAT Subject test booklets or just some of them. Apparently the book code was 7C1 but they had it shaded as 7C0, with instructions to copy the book code exactly as it was onto their answer sheets. Dd said the person in charge of testing came in and told them to both write and bubble it as 7C1.

Yes, ds said something like this happened.

Yes, my daughter mentioned this, but the proctor at her location told everyone to write it in as 7C0.  I hope it doesn't create any issues...

Oh, this sort of thing is so hard to watch as mom.  I'm sorry.  A life lesson, indeed.

Yes, here too.  There was also some additional problem where an entire section was missing from their bubble sheets, but I don't know what the details were.  DS didn't really understand what the problem was.

I didn't realize that there was regular SAT testing the same day as the Subject Tests.  I figured we'd get there and there would be 10 or so cars in the lot, but when we got there it was packed.  I was shocked that so many people take the subject tests!  Wow!

It wasn't until my son came back to the car and told me that all the people were there for the regular SAT and there were only 3 of them for the subject tests.

He thinks he did pretty well on the Bio-M test, but the 2nd hour of World History was hard. I think he was losing his focus. They were strict about the 5 minute break and he was too intimidated to ask where the bathroom was and he got a headache and didn't take the headache meds I gave to him to take if he got a headache.  So he took the 2nd test having to use the bathroom and with a headache. I guess he learned a life lesson today, too.  I told him that it's ok to ask for directions to the restroom if you need them and to take meds if you need them, but he felt embarrassed or intimidated or something.

Dd took the general SAT for the first time and was very happy when she came out. She said reading was similar to the test prep she did, but math was easier.

Younger boy managed to finish all the sections of the SAT this time. He couldn't finish the first time he took last year in November. So he was singing all the way to lunch

DD took the biology E test this AM and felt she did well.  She said there were a lot of gift questions on the E test, and she finished early (that never happens) and had 10 minutes left to re-check some answers.  She also said there was less A+P on the test than she expected.

All I know is that doing test prep was miserable for us both.  There was something about it that I hated.  Don't know why.  I hate scrap booking, too, and I got the same antsy feeling helping him with test prep as I do about scrap booking.  I'm so glad it's DONE for my own sake as much as his.

:grouphug: my older spent 7hrs on test prep per subject tests. Bribes of Skittles (candy) were involved for him as well as me.

Test prep for the general SAT was more tiring as there were just more questions per practice test. We had to resort to chocolate to just keep going.

ETA:

Sorry about the headache and needing a restroom break. Testing with strangers can be intimidating.

My kids couldn't find their names on the classroom allocation rosters pinned onto the walls. I had to tell the gatekeeper that they have been standing in front of the rosters looking lost. My kids are under 13 so the gatekeeper went and help them locate their names. Some names were in the general office instead of on the wall roster. Eventually my kids did get to the correct rooms. My DS11 is short so people do realize he is under 13. My DS12 is about 5'10" so he has to inform people he is in middle school because the testing personnel lookout for a "short" boy, not someone taller than them.

Well, I found out that he didn't just sit but rather took the portion of SAT passed out to him and then went and talked to the staff during break. So I guess free practice on a test we didn't pay for?  Anyway, he said it was much easier than the practice test so he must have been able to focus and he said he brought black tea in travel mug. He is getting old enough to figure out what he needs I guess. Maybe those other things are as big a win as any score he could get. He just gets some points off for sitting in the wrong room.  . So I won't cancel the score but it does sound like things were not that organized. It is possible or maybe probable though he just wasn't paying close enough attention. We just dropped him off because he is 17 and needs to learn to ask questions of strangers (obviously), pay attention to detail  :001_rolleyes: , and find his way around a strange building. I joked with my DH when he wasn't appearing from the building that he probably got a perfect score but couldn't find his way out of the building.

I'm sorry. :(  You always hope they get to show their best and that is really hard under those circumstances.

This is my ds.  He is ASD.  Brilliant, but can't find a public restroom.  He has to travel to NYC for work in August and I am a wreck about him navigating airports alone.

My ds took bio-m. said it was easier than barron's, harder than PR. had enough time to go over answers and caught 3 careless answers. won't be an 800, but he's hopeful it's in the mid-high 700s.

sat testing was far different than ap & psat loctions. very disorganized here too! we arrived at 7:45 to find a line of kids snaking like a 1/2 a mile around. i told him to hop in the back of the line while i go up front ot see what's going on. there were 300+ kids, and maybe 10 parents floating around. my ds said he wanted me to stay until he found what room he was in. so up front i find this long snaking line is only for sat w/essay. which i'm sure no one knows. so i go back, tell him to come with me and we hop into a short line for sat w/o essay + sat subj test. then as time seemed to be pressing, they started yelling for everyone to break into smaller lines and sent all sat subject test kids out of line, to find their name on the sheet for room assignment and just go straight to room. at that point, he found a friend of his so once they started walking together, i hung back and told him see ya later....

school is done!!!! first year of testing is done!!! SOOOOO happy! time to buy next year's curriculum, put away the school desks and organize my homeschool closet. YAY!!!! :hurray:

**oh and he's only 14 - so while i dropped him for AP/PSAT testing, he asked if i'd stick with him until he found his room assignment. and good thing really. would've been a whole lot more nerve-wracking and confusing.

SAT test sites locations deal with testing day very differently at the three sites my kids went to.

Site 1 and site 3 are the only high school in the same school district. That district has two high schools. Site 2 is a different district.

Site 1:

Classroom assignments for SAT was posted on one wall. SAT with essay on another wall. SAT subject test was on another wall. So kids were directed by test marshalls to look at the correct wall. Then parents could walk their kids to the door if they want to for the younger kids. There were helpers near the classrooms used for testing to direct kids to the correct door. The tester at the door checked my kid in.

Site 2:

Many kids nicknamed this test site the prison. It is really gated up. The kids have to show the gatekeeper their admission ticket and photo ID to get into the gated compound. Then they turn right for SAT subject test and left for SAT. After turning left, the kids are split into two groups of SAT and SAT with essay. After that the groups are subdivided by the first letter of their last name. There were people in the gated compound at every sorting checkpoint.

Site 3:

We thought it would be like site 1. However there is a gatekeeper even though the school isn't gated. They tape the boundary pillars. The classroom assignments are taped to the wall in no particular order. Some classroom assignments are in the general office so my kids ended up going there when they could not find their names.

After that the kids just head to the cluster of classrooms that are used for testing. There are people there to direct once the kids arrive at that cluster.

Someone has testing accommodations and needed help knowing where to go. The gatekeeper walkie talkie for help and staff from the general office escorted the child to the correct room.

My kids were used to navigating airports boarding gates so they were just mildly exasperated.

ETA:

While my kids do not need to show photo IDs as they are under 13, it was faster to show passport than to do a Q&A of birthdate and city that they live in to verify identity.

I'm thankful my kids are able to take the SAT/ACT at the university where dd is dual-enrolled. They are well-organized and the routine is always the same. We know where they will eventually post the room assignments (alphabetical, except all subject tests are in one room), so we always stand near there. The same man always gives the opening announcements about cell phones, etc., and dd can mimic his intonation pretty well! In the months when they have Duke TIP students (this past January there were 111 of them, they said), they usually put them in rooms of their own, and didn't mind parents coming with the kids to the room to drop them off.

Only seven kids at our testing site so not a line to bee seen! 😀 Next closest testing center is either a 5 hours drive or a three hour ferry ride away. I guess not that many kids take the subject Tests here!

Building was unheated so 5 degrees Celsius. Brrrr. DS was glad I gave him my jacket at the door as he was wearing shorts. 🤔😯

Oh, are you experiencing winter weather now?  We had a similar experience with an unheated school in the winter.  All the students of that school were prepared, but not us, alas.
