Favorite summer dresses/skirts/sandals

I'm certain this has been talked about, but I have searched and searched and just can't seem to find it.  I'm hoping to buy a couple casual summer dresses and skirts this week before we head out on vacation.  We live where it is HOT and I'm also carrying a little more weight than I'd like so hoping for not skin tight (as is the rest of society who will see me  :001_smile: ).  Also looking for a new pair of flip flops, but with more support as we will be walking quite a bit.  I'm really looking for everyday run around wear.

Would you pretty pretty please share your favorites (maybe with links?).  I'm searching all around online but struggling to know if they really work on real people or not.

Thank you!!!

This is pricey, but I have an earlier version and it is the most cool and versatile skirt I have ever owned, bar none.  Dresses up with hose and a top and jacket for business, dresses down in flip flops to be the coolest skimmiest skirt ever but does not fly up in the breeze, durable with a stretchy enough waist to hike in on really hot days when even shorts are too warm, and it's washable.  I know it looks kind of formal in this picture, but mine is a deep dusty navy blue, and its thin fabric is just wonderful.

I bought one like this in natural linen a few years ago, and it is just a tad dressier, but unfortunately it's a bit warmer: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/niczoe-the-long-engagement-midi-skirt-regular-petite/3831906?origin=coordinating-3831906-6021433-2-FTR-recbot-recently_viewed_v3&recs_placement=FTR&recs_strategy=recently_viewed_v3&recs_source=recbot&recs_page_type=category

Tevas!

hot and humid climate or hot and dry? I live in hot/humid and I've been wearing synthetic fabrics more so that I don't get heat rash. Also, if chub rub is a possibility, think about undershorts for your skirts!

I have been wearing Coolibar, Columbia, and the occasional skirt/dress from Target.

I bought some dresses from Pink Blush Maternity a couple years ago. I've lost all the weight now but they're still really cute and comfortable. Nobody thinks they look like maternity clothes.

I have this "flippy" skirt. It's knee length on me, I'm 5'3". It's a nice thick knit.

I'm very picky and these sandals are comfortable enough for me to take my kids for walks. Not good for poolside, though.

I've had some Born Concept leather thongs for six years. They're very comfortable. Any sandals in that brand I recommend.

I also have a midi skirt from eShakti that I wear very often, but I can't find the same style to link it.

I absolutely <3 my abeo's.  they're at the walking company. I bought a pair of hiking sandals - and ended up wearing them everywhere. they also make flip-flops that have a lot of support.  I forked out the $$ for my son who would only wear flipflops - everywhere.  (unless he has to wear shoes.)

I bought Vionic flip-flops based on recommendations from the board last year. They are fabulous and I can walk for hours in them. I wore Jockey shimmies (I think that's what they're called) under skirts up until last year and that definitely made skirt wearing more comfortable. I also have a pair of Birks that I love and have had for years.

I just bought myself and my DD dresses from Lands End and we both love them.   DD loves maxi dresses, so that's her favorite style, but this is the first maxi dress I've bought for myself.   We live in FL where it's already been very hot and humid, and they are just right for the weather.   I wore mine with a white cardigan to dress it up.

The one I bought myself:  https://www.landsend.com/products/womens-sleeveless-knit-maxi-dress/id_308965?sku_0=::VNQ

The one I got for DD, in turquoise:  https://www.landsend.com/products/womens-sleeveless-knit-maxi-dress/id_308964?sku_0=::XJG

My DD is about 5'2" and I would have normally bought her a petite small, but they didn't have any petites in the color she wanted.   So I hemmed it up about 3 inches.   It's very generously cut in the bust.   I bought myself a medium, and I'm somewhere around a size 10-12, and it is also generously cut and fits well.

For flip flops, I like Olukai Ohanas or Cobian Braided Bounce.

For dresses, what I like to do when it's pretty hot is wear a stretchy single maxi skirt with a wide elastic waistband as a dress, pulled up just over my Br area.  No bra, obviously, so if someone stops by I grab one of those sleeveless vests to throw over it.  Nice and cool and airy.  LuLaRoe has those skirts.  CAbI used to--I'm not sure whether they do this season.

These maxi dresses are so cute! I had yet to find a maxi dress that I think would look good on me, but I think either of these could work.

Seconding the Abeos.  Mine are more like glorified flip flops without the toe divider, but they stay on and I can walk fast and wear them all day.  No heel strap though.  I wore them every day and everywhere last summer.  Mine are the old version of this sandal:  https://www.thewalkingcompany.com/abeo-alli-neutral-black/47713?gclid=CjsKDwjw0cXIBRCxjqnE3K3sHhIkAL1LezTUhOc78ixTYxPtOfXhjkF3Wjjkx1R-hCMcUX_-sN31GgK8CPD_BwE

The skirts, dresses that I have bought in the past 1 year when I could actually wear nice clothes because a skin issue went away came from Soft Surroundings.  Flow-y and cool.  I lived in the Santiago dress (long tank, basically, with a skirt that lets you MOVE it).  So much so that I got three of them.  They were my "summer blue jeans."  I have some fun skirts from the past, but they are really out of date and no one sells them anymore so no links.  This summer I hope to get a couple of shorter skirts; most of mine have been to the ground.

I picked up a couple of tee shirt dresses at Old Navy in March. I think this link might be it, but I bought a size that would be a little roomier than how this model is wearing it! I plan to use them as swimsuit cover ups too.

Ali,

These are so cute. How short are they?

SebastianCat -- How funny! I was looking at the red dress. VERY cute. How long is it? I've never worn a maxi either. My worry is that I'll feel like a red light bulb. What do you think?

Okay, maybe I shouldn't have started this thread. I want everything. Currently have items on my eBay watch list, items in my amazon carts, and then a bunch of other random windows open on my computer.

The last few flip flop links have been amazing...exactly what I'm looking for. And how have I never heard of soft surroundings? Way more than I want to spend but I really like them and they're only 15 minutes from my house (and right near a Walking Company store). Really think I may go look later this week...

I love these threads! I've recently rediscovered White House Black Market. I don't  pay full price -- I try to just look at their sale items.

I see a lot of White House Black Market on ThredUp. Actually just bought a lovely shrug of that brand to go with a dress I'm wearing to a wedding.

Soft Surroundings info;  always look on their online sale board.  Always.  And for the record, their in-store sales prices are better than their online sales prices.  I saw a skirt online that I loved; it was $99 marked to $69 online.  No way am I paying $99 for a skirt but maybe $69 if it is the fabric I think it is.  So I went to their newly-opened store and found the skirt was just what I wanted--and $33.  I bought 2.  I wear them alllll the time in the winter.

This next part isn't just about Soft Surroundings, but I'll use them as a case in point.  I love that their online samples show a video of a model wearing the item and walking in it.  I want to see how the garment moves, especially a skirt.  I hate getting tangled up in a skirt that has no movement to it.  And until I am familiar with a particular store's offering, I really appreciate being able to go to a store and see the item.  There is one skirt I particularly like the look of, and the model's video of, but in the store, I found that I just didn't care for the feel of the fabric,

Does this look like the same skirt? I'm petite so the one you linked wouldn't work for me personally.

It's pretty long, and I would probably prefer it about an inch shorter. I'm 5'8" and had to lift the skirt slightly going up stairs. But it is gorgeous - definitely not a red lightbulb! I typically wear sleeveless dresses or tops with a cardigan because I get cold in air conditioning and it looked really nice with a white cardigan.

My favorite travel dresses are Athleta. They fit well, don't wrinkle, and dry quickly if I have to hand wash. They run small, in general, so keep that in mind if you want a looser fit. I think they are pricey, but I have pretty good luck on ebay or used sites like Thredup.

Yes, that's it.  Of the three colors, I'd pick mushroom, personally, as the most casual/versatile.  Black would be the most businesslike I suppose.

The cut is exactly the same.

The difference is the fabric.  This current one is a knit jacquard.  Mine is fine cloth, so I think it's more durable and also maybe cooler, too.

My favorite sandals are Keens.  I have a casual pair: https://www.amazon.com/Womens-Sage-Ankle-Sandal-Poseidon/dp/B00ZG2H2NA/ref=sr_1_13?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1494414560&sr=1-13&nodeID=679425011&psd=1&refinements=p_89%3AKeen%2Cp_n_size_two_browse-vebin%3A5391088011

And a dressy pair: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ZFL480M/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

(subjectively dressy - not wedding appropriate, but not the casual sports sandals above)

I've had my eye on these dresses from Land's End (search for a coupon code, don't pay full price, sizes are true, watch the fabric content as they tend to prefer thick polyester blends that are well constructed but don't do as well in really hot weather): https://www.landsend.com/shop/womens-dresses/-/N-fy7?cm_re=lec-_-wms-_-global-_-glbnv-dresses-_-20160316-_-txt

I buy most casual sleeveless summer sundresses from Old Navy (they frequently have sales & coupon codes too, but if you really love something just buy it, they sell out fast, size down, most are appropriate for hot weather IME): http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/category.do?cid=15292&sop=true&mlink=5360,13345310,W_1&clink=13345310

Dansko (https://www.thewalkingcompany.com/dansko-sandals-womens) has various styles of sandals. The height helps a bit with the long length of maxi dresses. It strikes me as odd to see someone wearing a gorgeous dress with it trailing on the ground. (Think parking lot-- not Red Carpet Gala...) Even more puzzling is when the dress has clearly gathered dirt or become stained over time.

I post this one every year:) still my favorite. Sometimes you can find them on sale if you Google.

http://www.zappos.com/p/royal-robbins-discovery-skirt-jet-black/product/7498871/color/42005?ef_id=WKDMsAAABdwBqIGo:20170510122543:s

I opened this thread to recommend this skirt.  I love it! Casual and flirty.  I have it in kind of an olive green.  I'd like to have another one or two...  I live somewhere windy, where I can't seem to wear skirts without having a wardrobe malfunction, but this skirt is fitted most of the way down, and just blows up around the flare - so less of a danger.

I bought a couple of simple dresses from REI last year, also made by Royal Robbins.  They are comfortable and cool. I like that they have a little sleeve and that they are just right at my knee (I'm only 5'2" so that may not be true for you)  I can't find the exact dress, but it is similar to this one:  https://www.royalrobbins.com/essential-tencel-dash-dress   I think I might have to order one of those, too.  The best thing about a dress is that I don't have to worry about finding a t-shirt that works with it.
