And, after one doctor's appointment... my summer plans are changing.

Lisa I will continue to include your son and your family in my prayers. His health comes first. Swimming and university are lower priorities.  Ask the Cardiologist about what he can and cannot do, regarding the medicine and pending surgery.

Yesterday's appointment went well.  I've been reading a lot these past couple of days...trying to drill down on some better specifics of his condition and potential outcomes.  I spoke with the doctor about what I'd been reading, and he agreed with what I'd found in relation to my son's condition (whew!), of course, that is based only upon statistics and general data.  The cardiologist could take a look-see and we could get some very different results.

But, right now, at this point in time, it looks like DS should be cleared for all activities (some caveats...watch your heart rate, possibly take a day off between training sessions, etc.) until his surgery.  It also sounds like he may only need 1 week to recover vs. 6 months.  That is all tentative.  Praying for closer to the best case scenario, though.  It's strongly in his favor that he's never fainted (or nearly fainted), that he hasn't felt sick or "off" during practice (just the more rapid heartbeat -- although even that hasn't passed 210, and apparently he's considered okay as long as his resting rate is less than 220?  Wow.)

Just over a week and we'll be in the office on the next step.  I have all of his referral letters, medical records going back to babyhood, EKG, new patient forms for the cardiologist in my folder (which goes with me on the plane...and does not leave my sight).  Now we wait.

Just saw this thread (I've been off the boards more than usual lately) so sorry I'm coming in late.

A few years ago, we had "one of those summers."  Dd was referred to more than one specialist, including a pediatric cardiologist.  It was quite an long period of "hurry up and wait."  See this doctor, go to this office for this test, see that doctor, come back, get another referral, do another test at another office, try this medication then come back in 2 weeks, etc.  We got answers and a protocol to follow.  We go back this summer to touch base with the peds cardiologist.  Dd graduates high school this June and we need to discuss college and all the changes that will bring.

I guess what I want to say to you, is to take care of yourself in all this.  Of course, your son is the focus, as it should be.  But, you are are the support system.  You are researching, driving, asking questions, looking at insurance, etc. etc.  It takes a toll on you.  Also, the emotional side of a mama's heart......your "baby" is going to a cardiologist.  That is scary.  Take care of you so that you can take care of him.  Eat well, sleep, stress relief measures, etc.

Lisa, just wanted to post that I am thinking about you all and hoping for the best outcome.  I know swimming has been so important to him and I hope he gets to keep doing that.  But even if not his health is more important.

@Lisa I am thankful they discovered that your DS has a Cardiac issue. I hope the issue is minor. The most important thing I hope is that it is not Life Threatening. I remember watching an "Extra" on TV (shown to overseas viewers when U.S. viewers are shown commercials) about a Cardiac problem they were seeing in NJ High School athletes. I forget what the problem is. I think they said it affects 1 in 500 or 1 in 1000 teenagers? That was probably 2 or 3 years ago when they showed that "Extra". In NJ, they screen High School Athletes (and possibly all High School students?) for that issue. They started that program in NJ, after several apparently healthy High School athletes dropped dead. Your DS and your family remain in my prayers.
