Have you all seen this story? He walked up to a random old man and shot him to death yesterday. :crying: WTH is wrong with people? Even scarier, the killer was a caseworker with mentally ill children!

If you're in any of the surrounding states and even think you see this man or his car, please call the police immediately.

Dh and I saw this story this morning. Horrifying. We just think about the kids on FB who might have seen that live. I guess only people he had on his friends list would see it live? I hope at least. Ugh.

Unfortunately, I saw the video. It was all over FB on sites that were reporting the news. Very disturbing. I hope they took down all those videos showing the shooting and the man lying on the sidewalk.

That is horrible.  Not just disrespectful for the victim and his family (disrespectful is not a strong enough word), but horrifying to most people and possibly titillating to some.

Found myself being more aware than usual as I was out running errands this morning! Horrifying!

We are also in one of the states they're searching.  I've already decided that unless he's found by then, no way is my daughter walking to or from work tomorrow (half mile through our quiet neighborhood).   Super low odds, I know, and an emotional but not logical response, but.. I know I won't be able to let her walk out the door.

So horrible for the victim's family, as well as for the family of the woman he blamed his actions on.

Am I the only one wanting to ditch fb altogether even more than I did before? If only we didn't have fb groups as the main communications channel for some of our activities, I'd log off for good today.

Eek! I took a long walk this morning a dawn and didn't even think about it then. I hope they catch him by tomorrow morning!

We were hiking in a nearby park when this happened.  My dd called me, upset, and asked me to please just come home!  I told her I was pretty sure the guy wasn't going to end up where I was but we left earlier just to get home and wait to see if they'd catch him.  All of my kids are shaken by this story!  (We're south of where the shooting occurred by about 8 miles or so, so I was never really worried about being out, just cautious.)

It's not FB I want to ditch, but our collective national obsession with guns. It sickens me to no end that we continue to let this happen. These days, I almost feel complicit by remaining a citizen.

Almost all depressive men who kill either kill themselves or basically do a suicide by cop.  I am much happier that it wasn't the suicide by cop because of how the cop feels when forced to do that.  This whole story is so disheartening about the mental health situation in this country.  This guy was a mental health counselor or helper of some kind.  Yet, he didn't avail himself of services to help his depression and of course, we have such laws here that these stories happen over and over again.  It is so hard for concerned family to do anything except watch the horror show happen.  I feel so badly for the family of this man as I do for the very large family of the man who was murdered.

I remember the days when major broadcast news stations would not show a corpse on screen, regardless of manner of death. That's what TIME Magazine was for, and it was staffed by photojournalists necessarily recording historic atrocities. That decorum ended with 24 hour cable news, the digital age, and multiplication of paparazzi.

Yes, these things must be recorded, and I have healthy respect for the first amendment, but the world seems a colder place.

The man had a gambling addiction. So it was beyond depression. He felt utterly hopeless. That doesn't justify blaming others, and certainly is no grounds for abusing or murdering others, but the shame and deceit that accompanies a gambling addiction can be insurmountable. With depression alone, one might easily or eventually come to an understanding that there's a physical, chemical cause. I believe it's much harder for the compulsive gambler to see that. I think that the cities that have resorted to casino gambling to fund projects and programs need to take a hard look at the mental health correlation and find more creative ways to raise revenues than cannibalize their own populaces.

Sorry, rant over.
