School Shooting at Elementary School in San Bernadino....praying

more information is coming out.  the man signed in at the office to see the (female?) teacher.  the two students who were shot were standing next to the teacher.

if she'd had a restraining order against him - would the office know?  generally visitors signing in aren't telling the office workers their names.  they just sign in. what would their options be to prevent him from moving further into the school?

domestic violence situations can come anywhere and anytime.

I just saw on twitter (so I should probably confirm before posting) that an 8yr old has died. Just so senseless and heartbreaking. I just can't imagine.

The LA Times webpage linked upthread was updated at 3:50pm :(

"A teacher and an 8-year-old boy were shot and killed Monday morning at an elementary school in San Bernardino after the teacher’s husband opened fire inside a special needs classroom before turning the gun on himself, police said."

We lose more than three women each and every day to domestic violence homicide in this country.  Every single day.  I wonder if each and every murder got this sort of coverage if we'd finally do something?

I guess they would only know if she told them, but I would assume if she had, that would be the first place she would tell.

When my oldest was in public school security was pretty tight. It got even tighter after Newtown. I would think if you had a restraining order and the front office knew they'd never get buzzed in....We always had to hand over a licenses, have it scanned, have a printed sticker with our photo and name on the sticker and then hand the sticker back to the receptionist when you left. There was one way in, one way out. And this was over 3 years ago......if you volunteered past a certain capacity it was an automatic background check. And it didn't matter if you were up there ten times  week volunteering. Same routine every time with the license scan and you had to be buzzed in through the front office to get into the hallways to get to the classes. No friendly shrug and wave through to bypass.

I would guess she hadn't told anyone at the school and they had no idea. I can't see a school not being uber cautious these days if they had even the slightest reason to worry.

So sad, the whole situation. :(

that's the thing - they might have just the main door unlocked - but you can still just waltz right into the office (or even bypass it), sign your name on the roll, and move on in.  no one will stop you unless they are 1)paying enough attention to care, 2) ask your name - which they don't do.

even with a restraining order - it doesn't stop anything, just increases the charges when the angry person does something.

as the mom of a SN kiddo - I feel a lot of anger.   because of his needs and what the school offered, I put him in a regular school because of the support they could give him.  he was getting three adults in a classroom with six kids.  plus pull out with a SN teacher and his paras.

My heart goes out to the families, and those little kids who witnessed this.  I hope they get all the help they need.

the two kids who were shot were reportedly standing next to their teacher.

And very often, children witness domestic violence and are horribly affected by it, just like the little ones at this school will be.

I never seen anything like that here.  For dd18s school, there are multiple buildings and access points. You can go anywhere at anytime.  I walk in, sign my name on the log, say "couseling center," they nod, and I walk off.  If I don't go in to sign-in on my own, they would never know I was there.

One elementary we went to, had the parents stop and get a badge, but you could tell them pretty much anything and they let you walk on by.

The only school that treats it serious, is the therapeutic school my daughter goes to.  They are super strict compared to the others, but still don't check ID.  Everyone is buzzed in the front door AND must stay in the lobby.  We are only allowed past the lobby for meetings with an escort.   The school is on lockdown several times a week, but it is internal lockdown due to students.  Their rules are to protect the visitor, not the students. LOL

I don't think our high schools are near as restricted simply because they're so huge and with kids coming and going to multiple campuses, buildings etc. I would assume they aren't. But the elementaries definitely are. Ours already had a single point entry before Newtown, but when we were looking to move and touring schools afterwards they were retrofitting the ones that weren't to be similar. Our Jr High was pretty tightly controlled too. But I haven't been to the high schools in the last 20 years to have any idea. I think it's easier for the elementaries around here because most of them only serve small pocket neighborhoods. They aren't massive schools. The higher the grade campus, the more kids.

But knowing he was a teacher's spouse, I would assume they just would wave him through even with security unless they knew in advance there was a big problem.

Are the classroom doors not locked? At our school, all classroom doors stay locked.

Classroom doors are never locked at my child's school. In fact they are often open.

This school did add a system that routes everyone through the front office this past year, but while theoretically parents are supposed to sign in they don't actually enforce that. I heard a discussion about it where the office staff were claiming they don't have the manpower to control access. So the doors into and out of the office are wide open and people just walk through.

As far as security, you have to be buzzed in to all the schools here. No doors are unlocked and there is only one door that you can be buzzed in through. Then, you either do your business at the front office (can't get to rest of school without going through) or you show ID and get a pass to go where you need. No one is allowed to volunteer or be with students unless there has been a background check done. None of that would stop a spouse of a teacher though.

It's so sad and I feel for those kids that had to witness it all.

What if he had no access to a gun?

My heart breaks for the parents of the two little children.

knives.

eta: or, he could just wait until she exited the school and run her down with his car.  (and any other kids and parents near her.)

I had assumed all schools were like this from my experience. After reading this thread it makes me sad they aren't. I think they all should have this basic expectation of security. Can't stop everything, but it's at least a start.

Innocent bystanders get caught up in domestic violence issues all the time. That's another reason why we as a culture need to be much tougher on it. One of my waitresses got caught in a bad episode in our parking lot where she saw a woman crying and approached to see if she could help but the woman's abuser was behind their car and got ugly fast. Police officers are often in jeopardy because of it.  People think domestic violence isn't everybody's problem, but it really is.

I am 100% certain if this woman had a restraining order against him the office staff would know. She probably didn't is my guess. But IME a restraining order really doesn't keep anyone safe. They are violated and all too often no one cares. Restraining orders give people around the domestic violence victim a false sense of security. They think something is being done.

a lot of schools are "campus" like.  many buildings, outdoor hallways.  even in the northwest - our district is slowly replacing the southern California style buildings with their outdoor hallways.   until recently - it wasn't a big deal.  and doors used to be unlocked.  now - only the main door is unlocked and any other door must be swiped with a card.  only the most recent even require someone coming into the school to go through the office.  (main doors can be unlocked for events - but they can be locked and people rerouted to gain access.)

and even then - when you have portables . . .

Right?!? Lock doors, so basic.

http://www.patheos.com/blogs/friendlyatheist/2017/04/10/why-isnt-the-media-pointing-out-that-the-san-bernardino-shooter-was-an-outspoken-christian/

More about the shooter. I haven't heard much from the media about the things mentioned above. I'm guessing there would be a discussion if he'd been of another religion, whether it was relevant or not.

Holy cow..  What do guns have to do with Jesus?

They are not free in Christ but filled with guilt, hurts and secrets that have crippled their life. So the stay!

They stay in that Bondage because they were taught or brainwashed into believing they if they support the Pastor no matter what– God is going to bless them!

It’s sad. Like the street gangs of our cities every pastor and church has their own banner or colors of Jesus.

I just pray for the and keep my guns close!
