MistyMountain
My upcoming 5th grader is good at spelling. I am looking for something she can do independently to expand on what she can spell.
Sammish
Perhaps the Sequential Spelling DVDs? My DS is a natural speller, and we went with SS because it has you spelling trickier words right off the bat, and doesn't spend forever working on only easy words. It helps them break a word down into its component parts to figure out how it's spelled. Also, no word lists to study! (We use the books, so it's not independent, but I've heard good things about the videos.)
2_girls_mommy
mine did the Rod and Staff workbooks on her own. They turn into vocabulary and word roots and the history of language more than actual spelling starting around the 6th grade book. It was all very useful information and totally independent work. Hypatia.
The Sequential Spelling DVD has been a good fit for my 12 year old DS1. It only takes a few minutes, is independent, he likes it and I'm happy with the results.
regentrude
Does she actually need a program at all? When I pulled my kids from ps in 5th/6th grades, resp, they were good spellers, and any spelling program was pointless busywork. So we never did any, and that was perfectly fine.
SanDiegoMom
We quit spelling after third grade. I have one natural and one decent speller who reads a ton. Gradually with all the reading she makes fewer and fewer mistakes. I like having a very streamlined day, so no extra time working on skills they are already pretty good at!
Mom28kds
I think I might do wordly wise for vocabulary and just have them write the words. That way there is no spelling curriculum but they are still learning new words. It doesn't take much for a natural speller.
