UnlikelyHomeschoolingMama
My DS is currently 7 years old (8 in September) and in 1st grade. I waited to start kinder for a variety of reasons, so he is on the older end of the spectrum. He has done really well in Math.I am constantly amazed at his math sense, his problem solving ability and the way he can quickly solve something that comes up in real life. We use ABEKA, as we did with DD, and he is doing fine. HOWEVER, he HATES a list of problems on the page. Straight math problems make him freeze up, but he LOVES real world problem solving. I ask him 8+5 he will freak out, but put it in a real world problem and he answers in a heartbeat. I am switching my DD to Saxon 6/5 after Abeka 3 and think I want to switch DS now also. He would go into Saxon 3. My question is...I like the looks of 3 intermediate vs. Saxon 3. It has more emphasis on real world problem solving. BUT he isn't a strong reader. For those of you who use it, can I just use it but read the lessons to him and then let him loose on the problems? I don't mind spending time with him on Math, but just like the layout of Intermediate better. Thanks for your help!!

I have seen where parents read math to their students for all sorts of reasons--even into the logic stage. I wouldn't hesitate to give it a shot, if you think that you've found the best fit for your son.
