High Schoolers in Hawaii (Oahu)

Recommended Posts

We are in Hawaii.

One group I'll recommend is the Facebook group Homeschoolers of Older Children Oahu (HOCO). There are active groups of teens who get together for game nights or science competition teams. There are field trips for teens, debate club, model United Nations and beach days.

Dual enrollment is pretty straightforward though course availability varies by campus.

Do you know where you are likely to live?

Not sure yet.  We are looking at Kailua or Kaneohe but my inkling is we and up in base housing so probably just north of the airport.  We would prefer to stay on the east side of the bay because #2 son would like to UH at Manoa and hubby will be at the shipyard.

You might also check out offerings at UH West Oahu, which is in the Ewa Beach/Kapolei area.  Also each of the community colleges on island is part of the University of Hawaii system, so courses taken at a community college transfer well to one of the UH campuses.

Some families prefer the Ewa Beach area because they are able to get larger and newer houses for BAH.  However the commute can be pretty rough if H1 gets backed up.

Navy Housing is managed by Ohana Military Communities (owned by Hunt.  It used to be run by Forest City, and you may still hear people refer to Forest City housing).  The Air Force side of the Joint Base has housing with Hickam Communities.  The Army bases (Fort Shafter, AMR and around Tripler hospital) have their own management company.  You can put a request for housing through each of the PPV companies and compare offerings.
