Christmas emergency! Need lego machine help!

So my son wanted a k'nex roller coaster with motor for the last several months and we've been planning on getting him that, but I just overheard him talking with a friend on the phone and he's under the impression that he's getting a lego set with machines and/or motors! I'm SO not getting him a mindstrom. First, he's not ready (he's 7.5, and bright, but not ready), and second, that was definitely NOT in my budget this year. Can anyone recommend something else that's Legos but a good machine and/or motorized set?

Maybe this guy, with a book to go with it?

you could get him that and a bunch of Technic pieces (this would have to be through Bricklink or a place like that) and possibly a book about building with Technic like this:  https://www.amazon.com/LEGO-Technic-Idea-Book-Machines-ebook/dp/B00C5S5UUA/ref=pd_sim_351_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=MQ3HDVDVW645Y6CTXX96

ETA: this (above) might be less expensive than the other options but I would still plan on it being around $50 for the Technic pieces plus the amount for the motor/battery pack set (plus the book, if you want it)

You could also look at used Technic sets from Bricklink:  https://www.bricklink.com/catalogList.asp?catType=S&catID=36&itemYear=&searchName=Y&searchNo=Y&q=&catLike=W

OR you could get him this that includes the battery pack and motor and some Technic, plus instructions for some things ($165 plus shipping);  https://education.lego.com/en-us/products/simple-powered-machines-base-set/9686

OR  you could get him a Technic set with a motor. They are really pricey but at least he would learn how to use the motor in a build.

For example, this set:  https://www.lego.com/en-us/technic/products/claas-xerion-5000-trac-vc-42054.  This is $149 retail.

OR you could look for a used Mindstorms robot with kit. They replaced the robot a couple of years ago and so you can get the older model for fairly cheap such as here:  http://www.ebay.com/itm/LEGO-Mindstorms-NXT-2-0-8547-/302175012838?hash=item465b08c7e6:g:RIUAAOSwux5YXX6g  (note: $147 plus shipping)

there are a couple up for bid on here: http://www.shopgoodwill.com/auctions/Lego-Mindstorms-Nxt-20-Set-35615550.html  but would have to be for after Christmas. Make sure you check shipping. It's a killer.

As far as what can you get by Sunday--aside of going to a Lego store or lucking out on Craigslist, it might be pretty tough. So sorry!!!

here is an example of a used Technic set from Bricklink with the motor and battery pack  Motorized Bulldozer 8275-1 $156.57 plus shipping

https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?S=8275-1#T=S&O={}

Note that some listings exclude the electronics so you don't want those. I also wouldn't want something without instructions.

Thanks so much! I don't have to have it by Sunday because we're traveling and didn't plan to open our own family gifts until we return next Friday, so this gives me some good ideas. I'm usually a big planner and do lots of homework on these things, so I think I panicked a little earlier today! Lol.
